Recently it came to my attention that the tractor I was driving had an disabled def system.
My question about this is if the Department of Transportation had discovered this would I as a driver receive some sort of punishment?
I was told once that if a company disabled the DEF system and was caught doing that there would be major fines sanctioned towards that company but as a company driver what I also be held responsible?

DOT will do what they do. You can save yourself some typing and just use the three letters.
I think you are not going to be made to disappear into club fed. But You do not want a truck with anything disabled.
I hope you are looking for another company to run for by now. -
It ain't the DOT that will be the problem, but rather the EPA...and it's the owner of the vehicle as well as whoever they suspect might have tampered with the emissions (including any shop that should've noticed and didn't report it).
-
Ultimately some of the blame will fall on the driver, you!
-
Paranoia much.....there is and has never been any real enforcement of this issue I would guess a full 10 to 30 percent of all of these emmision trucks over 500 k miles are deleted
-
Stay out of California and you’ll be fine. I’ve seen CARB doing emissions inspections at the scales. Don’t think DOT will care about your emissions unless it is something obvious.
-
You'll eventually plug up the particulate filter and the engine will de-rate. That's when the fun begins.
stwik and Justrucking2 Thank this. -

There is a guy local to me that owns about 15 trucks. All his trucks are 2014 and newer well maintained trucks. He will tell you the first thing he does when he buys a truck is have the def system disabled. Says it cost him 3-5k to do it but in the long run he saves way more than that on maintenance and says the trucks get way better fuel mileage. He has never had a problem with dot. Says he can’t go to CA, but “big deal, I don’t want my trucks in CA anyway”. He says lol.

I am a local ca driver and I hit the scales 4 times everyday or 20 times a week or 80 times a month and in my 5 years of driving I have never seen carb at the scale. My buddy is an owner operator here in ca running local only and his truck is 2011. He has been trucking longer than me and has never gotten caught
Diesel Dave Thanks this.
