I am repairing, many ISX blocks with medium to majorly cracked counterbores. Do not let your your repair shop, or Cummins, tell you, that the block needs to be replaced, because of cracked counterbores. They can be made better than new, while still installed in the truck.

How?

Man o man.
These isx engines sure seem like a pile of crap. All I ever hear about is nothing but bad . How's a guy supposed to make any money with this red engine under the hood.? Cracked counterbores now too!?KB3MMX, Oxbow, BoxCarKidd and 1 other person Thank this. -
I bore them for custom made, thick stainless steel shims until the cracks are gone. (Usually .090" to .150"). They crack because Cummins runs them too low from the factory. (Usually .009-.010") The liner then bounces on the counterbore, causing them to crack. (Mainly 2010-2012 with 152mm liners) I get them up to .014 protrusion.

Yup, When we rebuilt my ISX last year, we brought it up to .14 protrusion. Better believe I was in there for the before and after measurements!
-
I wonder if this is more prone to engines that get pulled down below 1300rpm? I have an X15 performance series in my new truck and she seems pretty pissed off when I pull it below 1300 with any weight behind it.
-
I do not know, but I do suspect that lugging affects them.
KB3MMX Thanks this. -
What's the typical cost to machine out the cracks and install the stainless shims?
KB3MMX Thanks this. -
$600.00 to cut all for .058"shims. $75.00 for each additional cut. (about .030" per cut) (.150" = 3 more cuts.) Plus shims $62.50-$120.00 each, depending on thickness) Plus travel time. I can travel anywhere.

It is far cheaper than replacing the block. In my opinion, a new block needs to have the counterbores shimmed to bring liners up to .014" or it may eventually fail also.
