heh flannel,
You said "no experience", did you mean no recent experience?
I noticed your profile said "Trucker: 19 years"
I believe it is the insurance companies!
I have found that even if you own your own truck, it will be hard to find a company that will take you on without recent experience.
Doesn't make much sense, but that is the way it is.

Yes that is what I ment! I don;t have recent experince driving semi Ive been driving strait struck flatbed all my life started out driving auto parts -
I'm in Fl. too and it is hard finding work from here! I'm thinking about moving in with my daughter in Ind.

Probably not a bad idea. Florida is notoriously bad when it comes to freight going out.
I still find it unbelievable that insurance companies consider someone with a year of recent experience less of a risk than someone with 10 or 20 years experience that has been out of the seat for a few years. How to drive a rig is not something you forget how to do! -
Ya Lilbit, it is a bummer about Florida.
I took a driving test today and it was like I never quit driving. I guess you don't forget if you learn in the first place.

My dad hasn't driven in quite a few years, with the exception of the periodic call he gets from the State Troopers. He's on their contact list for the scale houses around here for when there is a driver that is out of hours and needs to be at a truck stop to straighten some things out. He drives down to the scale house, he drives the rig, and the truck driver drives his car. A couple of times I've had to go along to drive the car because the driver's license had been suspended (left things to the wife to take care of and she didn't). He actually gets paid for this!

I'm a new driver and keep hearing that their insurence won't allow them to hire drivers with less than 1 or 2 yrs experience. I think there should be a supliment insurence new drivers could get to cover them.

I guess this is one of those things I will never understand. I had'nt driven a truck in nearly 18 years, and other than being rusty shifting, I fell right back in the groove. I can understand someone like me who has'nt driven for over 10 years but not someone who has been out just a couple of years.

I'm in the same boat with no recent experience and Florida is a freight black hole. The part about difficulty finding work even with your own truck is true. I thought I had this problem worked out and bought a truck on Dec 5th. I was wrong. 1st $1140 payment will be paid Jan 5th without a job for the truck found. I have a couple strong leads for companies to lease to and hope to be rolling soon. But, I got a really cool lawn ornament!
