For us neophyte's: what's a twic? Sounds like some level of security clearance. If it is, what circumstances require it and how do I get one? Thanks in advance for the response.

    • What is TWIC?
      • TWIC is a common identification credential for all personnel requiring unescorted access to secure areas of MTSA-regulated facilities and vessels, and all mariners holding Coast Guard-issued credentials. Individuals who meet TWIC eligibility requirements will be issued a tamper-resistant credential containing the worker's biometric (fingerprint template) to allow for a positive link between the card and the individual.

Hopefully the place that you are applying for the TWIC is a place you go often. The reason I say that is because the place that you apply is the place that you HAVE to RETURN to to pick up your card no execeptions.

I go on the time it takes to answer the question of the officer. If it is a few minutes then I don't log a thing but if I have to get up and get dressed because I parked in a wrong spot then I may go on duty. Absolutely go on duty if any paper work has been filled out other wise it is up to you.

I live on the coast in g.a. and there is a temp company here hiring people with TWIC to ride with or escort trucks onto the ports. I would check and see what the rules are about who in a truck needs the card. The driver or a passenger.

A few years ago at the border I got xrayed, led to a warehouse and unloaded. I'll skip the long version. Was there about 4 hours and I mentioned to the border agent about it screwing up my hours. She said I was off duty since she had the keys and I couldn't touch the truck.
All was fine, got reloaded and left in a hurry.:biggrin_25526:

If he knocks, answer it. If you are ok where you are, go back to bed and don't worry about it. Call it a dream. If you have to move the truck with the QC, your ten starts all over again.

Yon have to be currant to your last change of duty status, a police officer can knock on your door and ask for your log. I had this happen in Arkansas, I was watching television, having dinner and playing with the cat. Arkansas Highway patrol officer knocked and asked for my log. I handed him my log book and he asked how long I'd been there. I told him what time I parked and pointed the dish. He looked up at the dish and handed me back the log book and told me to have a good night.
The officer can not make you go on duty if you're off duty, but he has the right to check your duty status.
I knew a guy who tried to dodge a ticket in New Jerkski by going into a service area and climbing in the bunk. The officer had gotten him on radar and came to the door, the driver claimed he was off duty, he got arrested, cuffed & stuffed.
