My 955 appears to have grown legs and marched off to parts unknown.

I'm looking for a low to no frills replacement.

    Cobra 29LX or Uniden 980?

SSB is not a factor. I read that the 980 is just better built than a 880. If that's not true, then I'll also consider the 880.

I've got a 980, they are the same size, and I don't know specifics on receive and such, I just wanted a SSB that would fit in about anything, and it does, same size as a cobra 29.

You can't go wrong with either radio, both have basically the identical features except obviously the 980 has ssb, which is fun to play with when skip is rolling. The only real difference is whether you prefer push button adjustments on the 980 or the traditional knobs on the 29. Performance wise both radios stock are approximately 3 to 4 watts carrier and 12 watts pep and modulation level is good. The receive seems to be a little bit more sensitive on the 980, but that also means a little bit more static/white noise, so I usually set RF gain on level 3 ( 5 being max) and if you are near city lights you can press RF gain button and it will switch to local and filter out some of the static. As with most 29's the receive is really good. The 980 comes stock with a noise canceling mic that is a 6 pin and if you wish to use a standard 4 pin mic there is an included 4 pin to 6 pin adapter. The few differences between the 980 and 880 ( besides ssb) is the 880 comes stock with mosfet final so pep wattage is a little bit higher and the RF gain control is a knob instead if a button.

My antenna or his 955? My antenna was stolen at TA in San Antonio, Tx, with the low mounting position on the Cascadia you can reach it from ground level, ( you know that Mike) just walk up, unscrew, and walk away, dont have to climb up on step.

I meant his radio. But yeah, you are right, way too easy to steal the antenna off of a Cascadia!!

That's why I have the stainless steel quick disconnect. Loosen to Allen screws, pop it off and prop it up in front of the passenger seat if I'm laying over in a low rent neighborhood.
