I thought the shipping season was over, but the 620-foot Manistee hit the railroad bridge in St. Joseph, MI, on Tuesday, 12/30/08. The bridge can still carry rail traffic since the damage was only to the fendering system around the bridge supports. The Coast Guard is performing required drug and alcohol tests. My guess is that the freighter's bow thrusters were not sufficient in the winds of December. This was reported in the Herald-Palladium. I assume the Manistee had delivered a load of road salt because she was leaving the harbor empty.

The new Mackinac is just getting into its busy season. but many ports close for the rest of the winter. Some in Chicago stay open as long as the weather permits and other places. The Soo Locks if not allready will close soon also.
