Truckingboards is a much better forum for info on the LTL outfits, no offense to truckers report. ODFL is by far your best bet, they are the most stable AND the fastest growing. The two main union outfits (YRC/ABF) are dying so I wouldn't risk it, UPSF is unpredictable as well.
I don't think you have Dayton Freight up that way but if you do they are another great choice.

ABF is dying? That's far from factual. They are growing and making money.
UPSF unpredictable? From dying off?
ODFL is a good company but it doesn't come without negatives.
They don't pay overtime. You don't get paid for many activities.
If they're slow and you get laid off you are basically fired with the eligibility for rehire. But if you get rehired you start all over with seniority and pay scale.
Not to mention they are not very forgiving with mistakes. They don't like giving second chances too often.bentstrider83, Northeasterner and speedyk Thank this. -
I guess every company is up for debate... I've heard a billion things about YRC/ABF...
ODFL seems to be a very high-end non-union company. I wonder what their 401k match looks like, since they have a good rep but no pension.
Mistakes scare me... honest to god i'm kind of a nervous person! it took me months and months to get comfortable pulling 53" trailers... now it's like second nature. doubles and triples, tanker and hazmat... once I get my new cdl for here in nh I'll look into getting all those endorsements... I take it that the quick and easy, "brakes, lights, paperwork" pretrip won't cut it for hazmat and doubles/triples?
also, are doubles/triples called "trains"? is that a synonym?
also, thanks mack185 ill check the truckingboards! -
Please list specific reasons why you feel UPSF is unpredictable.

Way too many contractors and fast to layoff. My company has hundreds of customers that dictate which freight company to ship there product on if it isn’t going on our truck, not a single one uses UPSF. Your location may vary.

He was talking linehaul and as far as that goes odfl is one of the best. If YRC goes belly up, ABF will be the next big boy to go, Id bet money on it.
-
Based off of what? ABFs situation is no where close to YRC.
If anything YRC going under would leave more freight for ABF.
ABF is in no type of financial trouble and has been showing steady growth every year. -
Totally sounds like UPSF is on the verge of going under...

I don't think that's the point hes trying to make. It sounds more like if you go there as a line driver prepare to spend time at home while contractors making .38cpm haul your freight. I'e seen this situation with UPSF mentioned all over the place.
As far as being quick to lay off, I wouldn' doubt that either. -
I originally thought that is what he meant. But his second post made it sound like UPSF was getting no business based on his observations from the 100s of companies his company works with.
