Many thanks for that information. I bought this truck for RV use only. As I have a 36' three axle fifth wheel, three sliders trailer to haul. I have intention of mounting a box behind the sleeper to carry my Corvette in. So that means I have to stretch the frame. I have to take out the first axle on the truck, there is a major project in itself. I have until next May to accomplish these tasks. I feel a pickup/ no matter how big are under powered not safe to pull a 36' trailer rated at 18k GVW. Thus I didn't want to buy a truck the crawls up 8% grades. Too many truckers complain about RV trailers blocking the highway and I agree. My main concern is "safety and performance". I want maintence free travel, not time spent setting in a repair shop.
    Thanks again
    Rich

Just East of you over in Tonopah is a TA truck stop. They should be able to read your codes. There is also a truck shop over in Blythe which is closer. Their website says they work on Detroits, but I would call first. They are good guys, at least they were a few years ago.

    Google ramsey truck

As far as your fuel, any of the products will work that were already mentioned, the sulphur, that I don't know about. You can also use a little Isopropyl Alcohol in your tanks to help with water, around 2 ounces per tank I believe will do the trick.

And seeing that you are sitting, I would top off the tanks to keep condensation out. Also drain the air tanks by pulling the ringed pins until all air and water have drained out. And if you have a drain on your fuel filter or a water separator, drain those too.

Question: on the 1999 Freightliner , was there a dash read out for codes, if so, what is the sequence one must do to get that read out?

You can read the codes by switching the cruise control off. Then withe the key in the run position ( I perfer to have the motor running) you hold the set/resume switch up. The check engine light will flash a series of blinks. Like blink, blink, blink, pause, blink, blink, blink, blink will equal a code 34. After you have the code(s) find someone with a Detroit Manual and they can tell you what it means. The truckstop mentioned before might tell you, but I would call a Detroit dealer to be safe.

Also it would be a great investment to buy the manuals for the truck and engine. They can be a little pricey, but very worth it in the long run.

Thank you for the response, I have a friend who is sending me a couple manuals, don't know when they will get here.

One more question: Where is the jake brake cut off switch? I have checked every switch, where did the hide it?

What do you mean "jake cut off switch"? Are you having a problem with the jake, if so what kind?

Usually there is a switch tied in with the brake and clutch pedals and the ecm also controls the jake when it comes to the throttle pedal.

Over the past , I;ve seen signs stating , No use of engine retarter. I thought this truck would have a manual cutoff switch, ""I must be high on fresh air"".

If there is no on/ off switch, the truck may not have jakes.

The jakes on a FLD or Classic are two toggle switches on the upper dash just right of the instrument cluster; they would be roughly right in front of and above the shift.

I can't remember how it's set up on a Century with a Detroit, been too long since I have driven one.

Jakes weren't standard equipment, but most trucks originally hauling close to legal gross weight were equipped with them for safety reasons, it saves lots of wear on the service brakes.

I give you a GOLD STAR for that information (joking), The decals are missing. The jakes do work. I'll be glad to have some manuals on hand, as these questions must seem like "OH SHEIT" another double clutching idiot behind the wheel. Over two years now into the computer car world, Corvettes and now this truck, The mind takes a beating trying to consume all this information is a little boggling.
