Im a dispatcher/dm with 20 years behind the wheel. I can tell you nobody has it "easier" imo. Different but not easier. Driver (myself included in the past) calls dm and says, nope. Aint happening. Now aside from having to work around the freight, your moving on. Dispatch doesn't get off that easy. For me its a call to the customer, then a call to the salesman, then answering a angry email from the building manager about "satisfying customers ect.. and im defending the driver all the time hoping that he isn't just being a #####

Pipe dream. I’m so ready to sleep in my own bed every night, BBQs and beers with friends and family during the summer evenings, ride my motorcycle instead of staring at it under the cover. I’m beyond ready to be able to play ball in the summer and hockey in the winter again. I’m past the point of missing out on weddings, births, family get togethers and stuff that is far (now) more important to me than driving.

If you can’t tell, I’m pretty much over the trucking mystique and ready to take on a 9-5 in a cubicle very soon.

Well no joke my company is hiring. But you’d have to live in Tulsa. I just got a new driver manager yesterday with a message saying “please welcome _______ , our newest DM, who has years of experience in the industry..” That tells me he might have been a driver but is now new to dispatch.

Another guy at my company quit driving to become an instructor in orientation and a safety team person. He came in the same group I did 2 years ago and now he’s a company man with a bright future and home every day. In fact he called me randomly to do a “safety quiz” over the phone on Smith system. I’m like, “you know I got training on that the same day you did!” Lol

I want to be a dispatcher and I must be a decent driver too or else my boss wouldn't put up with all my moods and attitude.

I’m imagining here. Go to a truck junkyard. Strip an interior from “my” truck. Adorn the cubicle with truck walls. Use the cabinets. Really nice desk dashboard. Curtains on the entrance. Side view mirrors mounted outside to see who’s coming down the hall. Horns?
I almost forgot. The most common intelligent life form in the truck belongs in the cubicle too. A Pit Bull.
Seriously... It would be something I’m forced to do. Couldn’t drive anymore.
I respect those willing to learn driving so they know.

JBH actually tried to teach this old dog the smith system. I came close to failing it until I told one of them stop speaking tougues and legalease. Isnt there a trucker among you who knows this *&^%.

Two days later and after one of the most stressful smith system tests ever in a minivan with 7 drivers backseating my bad driving... ugh. I passed.

Between myself and the forest, I still drive my own #### way. Mr Smith might have needed a system. But all I need is a little bit of time and decent tires for traction.

I can... As long as it was:

    My cubicle administrating MY businesses

That business may or may not have anything to do with transport other than calling UPS....

I’ve always wondered why half of Tulsa doesn’t work from home... you mean to tell me my DM absolutely has to go into the office Monday thru Friday?

Meh. If I could work from home I’d sign up for that.

I was just thinking about this in another way.
An OTR cab has to be the best office cubicle in the world.
