Recently retired from the US Army after 23 years service, and am now in the 5th week of a 9 week driving course at the local Tech College.
Ready to start my next career on the road.
Any advice on what companies are good for a newbie trucker?

Welcome!
I have two suggestions for you -
try the search facility, (tool bar at the top, third from right) to search out threads about particular companies.
And head over to Last Post Wins, (in Fun and Games in the Everything section) to just yap with everyone else. Its ever so slightly crazy there, but you get used to it after a while! -
Tough call as one person's best company may be another's worst. Figure out what you want such as local, regional, otr, van, reefer, flatbed, dump, tanker, etc. and go from there. Find companies hiring in your area and see what they have to offer. Then research them on your own, take recruiters info with a grain of salt. Freight is slow and lots of companies aren't hiring right now so options may be limited. Thanks for your service and good luck to ya.

Ditto, I would just add that truck company recruiters are like Military recruiters. They may not lie to you but they ONLY answer the questions you ask. There job is to get you in the door. Thats it.
