I have posted recently about a new concept that involves building an upscale facility with exceptionally good food & services that also has a gated & secured lot with a superior "pull-thru" parking design among several other very appealing features that I believe the American Trucker will find exciting & desirable. My key question is this:

"If we offered you one of the best overnight parking, eating and rest facilities available in the US at a cost that you perceived to be fair & reasonable, how far would you be willing to travel from the freeway interchange to get there assuming it is easy to find and the road is not excessively busy?"

Thank you very much for your input and honesty.

Is it going to be reserved parking for those that can plan? With the e-logs wasted time going to somewhere that might have parking and might not is like gambling, feeling like a fool when going the distance to be turned away.

Here’s about the best way I know to answer. I rarely plan to stop anywhere more than a mile or two off my route. However, I have a few “hidden gems” around the country that I know I can always find a spot no matter the time of day. Some of those are 5-7 miles off the interstate. They come in handy from time to time.

It's not so much as willing, there was laws in my time long ago going back decades where you could locate a business that runs Semi truck traffic to and from a interstate highway, I have to clear the cobwebs from memory and call it a couple miles at most.

Wolcott IA, one of the largest would be a fine example if you had the room right there.

We have like 3 or 4 truckstops here in Galloway off I-40 and the pavements are ribbioned from the tearing up of the hundreds that get on and off there day and night. Ive been passing through here since about 92 and they must have replaced that road a number of times one pothole at a time.

If at all possible put that place on flat terrain. When the weather gets really bad in winter you would see that there will be problems getting in and out of there. Avoid Levee construction, deep ditches etc. Big enough to roll a truck on roads too tiny to take em. It makes no sense to build a 8 foot wide road to your entrance to save 100,000 dollars when you find you lose 10 trucks a month trying to turn onto it. But people do it to save a dollar.

I don't mind running 30 miles up woods and down hills to get somewhere good. But if no one knows about it... what is the point.

Also fleet managers have seem to have gotten picky about how far you can take a truck with that ELD business.

Don't try to think to build 11 hours from somewhere. Do it at about 8 hours. They'll be thinking dinner time by that 8th hour. Trust me.

My plan is to build a national network - located outside of roughly 80 major markets so that we hit most major corridors.

Sir, I wish you the best! It’s time for a new player in the game...someone who is thinking differently than the cookie-cutter mold out there now. Make it happen!

I would say keep it 5 miles or less, but, it also depends on traffic. If traffic is heavy, with many lights, I wouldn’t go more than a mile or 2.

    Right off the interstate.

NO one wants to drive for miles to get to something to rest.

We worked under a fixed time clock with flexibility built in to our work, we can't anticipate what will be ahead of us so if we are ready to run out of hours because of a traffic issue or other problems, then to expect anyone to drive three or five or ten miles to rest just adds more stress to the driver.
