A way too common method is to back under the trailer till you feel a bump. Get out and raise landing gear and hook up your lines. Jump back in and take off. Get going fast enough so your trailer completely separates from the tractor on the first turn you make. Also, raising landing gear seems to be optional .Blackshack46, Grubby, CrappieJunkie and 2 others Thank this.

If he's talking about the T-bar handle in a Cascadia, those grab and hold the brakes for a few seconds, something you don't want to do in the snow and ice.
-
No the trailer brake doesn’t grab and hold it for a few seconds, nor does a column lever. It will lock them dudes on fully and keep them there.Grubby, Bean Jr. and Need4Speed Thank this.

It's called a Trolly Brake.
Hit post too quick. This is used during times when you only want air to go to the trailer brakes. Otherwise you use the foot brake. I mostly used mine to tug test or to slide a tandem.Last edited: Apr 10, 2018
Grubby, Bean Jr. and Need4Speed Thank this. -
There are certain beam trailers and RGNs that don't have spring brakes. Without the hand brake, you're not going to get some of those heavy beasts off the ground. Even with ramps.
-
The new school way is most trailers today have spring brakes on them so the trailer won’t move if air is leaked off.
So you just back under and hit the pin.Grubby and Need4Speed Thank this. -
Going to add one more reason not mentioned, if it's not your trailer, they work great for getting rid of tailgaters
Grubby, Roger McG and Dave_in_AZ Thank this. -
