Ugh... Pilot injection.
Something else invented for no other reason than to appease snowflakes, that I now have to deal with.
When did common rails come out?

OP,
I think you're referring to HPCR
High Pressure Common Rail .... This is the modern version 20,000+ psi -
Pilot injection is good for the motor , cold startup and efficiency..... Not just emissions.
The pressure rise is smoother, which is easier on internal parts and and also improves combustion efficiency. -
Essentially I’m looking for what is the most efficient.
What’s pilot injection? -
That’s basically why diesels don’t sound like diesels anymore.
Each cylinder gets multiple shots instead of just one. It serves no other purpose than to control engine noise. -
Then how did diesel engines make it all these years so far without that?Tug Toy and spyder7723 Thank this.

So basically, the modern high pressure common rails, multi injection systems only improve emissions and noise over the older style low pressure common rails?Tug Toy Thanks this.

Well, fuel delivery and exhaust aftertreatment are two different systems, so no real relationship there, and pilot injection is easily turned off with a tuner for those who may be so inclined.
The only real difference I see between a common rail engine and an older design, which incorporated a pump similar to a distributor, is instead of 6 lines coming out of the injector pump going to each cylinder, you have one, and it splits off downstream to feed each cylinder with a return line back to the pump, so it recirculates. -
I guess the main advantage to an electrically controlled injector is, the computer can adjust the timing and duration on the fly depending on certain perimeters. Something a mechanical system can’t do..Bean Jr. Thanks this.

Pilot injection was out before common rail became popular. First I remember was the MBN Cat C-15. It had bump on cam for it and so did the pre SDP C15 Acerts. DDEC V Detroit's with N3 injectors were capable of multi injection. The delphi E3 dual solenoid EUI was capable of pilot injection and can vary pressure that needle valve opens (NOP) and closes like common rail. It was used in 07 Series 60, MP7 and 8, Volvo D11 and 13, Cat C13 LEE and C15 SDP.
