WiseOne's Comments, what a mess. I have been on that pass MANY times and can tell you it is dangerous to be sure. I would be willing to BET the trucker didn't have a Jake Brake. They should FORCE Jake Brakes on EVERY single truck made, period. I HATED running that crap for many years without a Jake Brake and smoking my brakes all the time. It SUCKS without a Jake Brake out west in the mountains and I have had the crap scared out of me for sure. Sigh...and it's 2009. IF he had a Jake and that happened...then something else was wrong, but I am willing to bet he did not.

There is a reason for Jake brakes, and those mountain passes are it.

Some one's wife was pitching a fit on here about a couple tickets her husband got on that stretch of road... The truck speed limit is there for a reason... to keep truckers from driving over their heads, it forces the use of the lower gears and better control of descent
if you give some truckers enough rope, like a higher speed limit there, they will eventually hang themselves with it... If I remember its like 25 or 35 mph.
Im not saying speeding was the case in this situation, that woman just didnt understand. -
You're right but many guy's think it's for truck stop parking lots and neighborhoods where people are sleeping....
-
That is childish behavior. It drives me nuts when I'd just be drifting off to sleep, and some jerk would roll by crackin the jakes in a rest area or truck stop. That is one of the things I do not miss about being out on the road.

Jakes --- I bet there are no less than 20 new Stevens drivers that just got out of school, that would like to know.

This link has a pic of the truck involved in the wreck, I don't see any markings as to who operates it.

Ya don't need a jake to come down a grade... just gear down and use your brakes sparingly. Jake is a good buddy, and nice to have though!
That being said... I'd be willing to bet the driver was one of those idiots that go flying down those grades out there at 90 mph. See 'em all the time. -
The markings on the truck are on the fairing. I cannot see them clearly though. -
True you do not "NEED" a Jake to come down the mountain, but as a Driver Trainer, I teach my students to use every tool available to you to protect yourself and the motoring public. Coming down these mountains with today's trucks without using a jake is stupid. Sorry if I offend anyone with that comment but there is no reason for it. I live in a town with 2 very dangerous mountain grades nearby and I see drivers everyday, multiple times a day, time burn trucks to the ground. Sorry, there is no reason for it.
