That is team pay, meaning he would get paid .17 for every paid mile the truck ran, wether he was driving or not. Not the greatest, but is doable if the truck is running long loads with little down time.

Some companies I know of pay that for a team coast to coast. It doesn't sound like a lot, but it is drop and hook, 5500 miles in 4 to 4 1/2 days, and then home. It adds up to pretty good pay per day with little work and no down time.

Right. Team pay. But still, the company said he'd be getting .17 a mile but in reality he's only getting .15. I understand that half of that is non-taxable because it is per diem but that doesn't work to our advantage either. We need to have the max taxes taken out of his check because all my pay is as an independent contractor. But I still wonder where the other .02 disappeared to.

    Hey Happy New Year everybody!!!

You should hear the company's latest message from Jerry. Now remember, I am paraphrasing what he said and please allow that I may have certain facts not exactly right. He begins by saying it's been a tale of two years. The company was doing OK up to the third Friday in September and then after that the bottom fell out. He said when they came in the following Monday morning they were 450 loads short and that every week since then they've averaged a 300-500 load deficit. He said normally the months of October, November and December are the best months but this year was different in that June was the company's best month. He says with the economy like it is, they can't increase revenue so they have to cut costs. He claims that Covenant's driver pay is still competitive. :biggrin_2554:
He also says that to keep from laying off drivers they are going to do five things:
    1. There will be no more short hauls
    2. No more buddy system
    3. Per diem will be mandatory
    4. Something to do with .02 per driver and hazmat. I can't remember the detail on that one.
    5. Drivers will be charged $250 per year for their pet on the truck.

He says the company has eliminated 213 non-driving positions and that they have downsized the fleet by 500 trucks.

He also said that the company will no longer match driver 401(k) contributions, they've eliminated the $15K survivor benefit and they've made a change to the safety bonus calculations that he wouldn't elaborate on. He said for the drivers to call their fleet manager for the details on that one.

And there you have it. All of you thinking of coming to Covenant might want to seriously look elsewhere.

Redcoat has now been off work for 13 days. He has approval to get a rental car to drive from Birmingham to Hutchins to meet up with his new team partner. It would cost the company $123 for a bus ticket so they are willing to reimburse him up to that amount for a rental. We can get it done but will be out a little extra for the gas which I can live with so Redcoat doesn't have to spend 15 hours on a bus and he can take all of his gear.

I believe the pair will first be going to Pamona to drop off Redcoat's partner's old teammate. Hopefully from there they will get a long haul to someplace and they can get started earning $$$ again. I would have put the cents sign but didn't know the ASCII code for it.

    Stay tuned!

Now my understanding was that if the truck (team) ran 6500miles, then the drivers would split the miles 3250 each, then times it by their rate of pay. If that is true then 17X3250=$552.50 doesn't seem right or do they both get paid for 6500 miles each? Which by the way would be a lot better..

It's the total miles. If (big IF) we ran 6500 miles total, each one would be paid 1105.00. However, lately teams have been running less than 4000 miles per week.

From the numbers, it looks like driving team is better when there is more freight than trucks (as a truck with team can run ALMOST continuously) and solo looks better when freight is slow...

Being that I'm a newbie on this, can someone else confirm for me whether this is the case ?

:smilebox:.....SUPRISE!! Are we improving yet? It comes down to a take it or leave it situation.....and the more that leave the better.....because then they can get cheaper labor in to pull their crap(frieght).
no more short hauls? i am predispathched for monday...2 stops and 650 miles....so
    what is the deal?
The deal is that they cannot at any cost be believed.......:blah5::blah5::blah5::blah5: is
all you will hear, have they mentioned a "freeze" on their pay?nope, and you won't.
they will cut jobs for needy people instead of finding other ways to reduce costs...
heres one, how about getting rid of that huge testament to self indulgance that they call the main terminal in chattanooga...that can't be cheap to run.....
and the hotel they bought for orientations? another white elephant.....but hey, they have the degrees and the -knowledge-:laughing-guffaw::laughing-guffaw::laughing-guffaw:what a crock o'poo!
    later ya'll......

    Code:

And this happens because from the beginning drivers have let them do this. And now they feel entitled to do it.
There are so many reasons why this happens,a bad economy driving people to get into the industry blindly, accepting what is offered w/o any
    question.Causing an abundance of new--cheap labor--.:biggrin_2554:
And also drivers that are experienced and figure that some $$ are better than nothing.
Maybe thru this forum, we can slow the flow of "unknowing" people to the --TRAP--:biggrin_25510:.
