This was my first time actually coming close to hitting someone it was on my first load with my trainer.

Emergency workers have a duty to warn us of problems ahead of time

That means that they should of had emergency lights flashing on cars before them standing in the road.

If they want to be safe out there they need to make sure we are aware of their presence.

In my oppinion they were idiots in this situation out on the turnpike.

The cop that I buzzed by was also an idiot for stopping between hills he could of got on his loud speaker and told the driver to keep going untill there is flat area or take the next exit witch was just about 200-300 feet down the road.

    FIRST time?!
Some of us have NEVER come close to hitting a human being, --- in over a million miles. Not even once.

I think the key word there is "EMERGENCY".
If you broke down on the side of the road, and a car plowed into your trailer before you set your triangles, would it then be YOUR fault, or the motorist who SHOULD have been paying better attention?

    Coulda
    Woulda
    Shoulda,....................
    Certain circumstances warrant certain actions.
Who are we, as professional drivers, to second guess what
    SHOULD have been done?
It's not for us to question why,
it's for us to DO, or someone might die.
    Be Prepared.

Seems to work both ways, ..... no?
    We owe THEM, too.
    Who knows?
The next life they save might be mine.

    I accept that's your opinion.
I'm just not convinced it's the best attitude.

And I bet those emergency workers have an opinion about that Greyhound bus driver.
Or ANYbody else who hits one of them while they're on a call.

How do you know what his options were?
Were you privy to that information?

Have ya'll ever entered an area, and hear yourself thinkin'
OOoooo, this would be a bad spot if someone were on the side of the road.
I think I should back 'er down, JUST IN CASE. (?)

    I have, and I listened.
Never sorry I did THAT, either.

    Just a thought I think I thunk. :biggrin_25519:

All I have to say is you were not in the truck with me on the turnpike so you have your oppinion and I have mine.

I am sure if you were in the truck at that time it would be clearer to you how this happened.

I was trying to be careful out there but It was not like I have xray eyes. The traffic was starting to slow down fast in front of me.

I can not see through alot of other trucks I was slowing down at the time then once everyone got out of my lane that is when I seen the guys in the middle of the road I was only doing about 30 mph at the time so I continued to slow down untill I got an opening to continue.
If I would of had to I would been able to stop.
By the time I got over I was probaly 100-150 feet from them only doing about 10 mph by that time.

In thinking back my trainer should of had his CB on then I probaly would of had a better warning about what was ahead of us.
He is the type to keep it off and listen to the truck radio.

My trainer told me that I handled it pretty good for it being the first time out there on the open road we did discussed it later on he told me when ever possible look as far ahead as you can see not just the 1/4 mile down the road that it tell you to in the books.

After that I did not have anymore bad things besides not being able to get over for that cop but like I said I was slowing down and trying to get over.
You are not required to stop the rig if you can not get over that will cause a wreck faster.

If anyone wonders he has had about 12 years of driving experince.

With all been said, and with our different opinions we can only go with what we read, we were not there watching it all go down. We are getting one side of the story. Could the fire fighter walked out in front of the Bus Driver? Could have and the Bus Driver could not have stopped in time. With the Driver being tired cause him not see him in time? yes.

So it best to get over if you can, but if not able to slow down and be prepared to stop in a hurry.

Even if your able to get over slow down. I had gotten over when I saw 4 State Troopers had 2 different cars pulled over. One of the troopers pulled out as I was passing and when he did the front of his car came out in front of me. Plus I had a car on my left also so I could not swerve.

I have been with Covenant for over a year now and it will not make 2 years. For a few months now I have been thinking about leaving Covenant for various reasons. One is pay. I have been with them for almost 2 years and I am only making .29cpm.
Now just a week ago Covenant announced that it is mandatory that everyone take the per diem, they took away local haul pay, plus bonuses are being taken away and now on top of a $500 pet deposit, they will now charge a $250 annual fee for people with pets. It seems to me when a company takes away opportunites for a driver make money, charges the driver more money, and or takes money away from people that they are not going to be in business very much longer and they are grasping at straws.
I have had enough of Covenant...If you are looking to Covenant for employment. I would say...do yourself a big favor and go somewhere else. I'm at my limit of BS.

I live in an area where many trucking companies will not hire. But Covenant would, in addition, I had been off the road for over 3 years, Covenant gave me a job. But in all my years driving I have never seen a company care so little about their drivers. My tri-pac heater stoped this last week in PA and my truck wouldn't idle. Well I froze and my pup froze and now I am sick. But they couldn't put me up in a motel, nooooooo. I have a new job at the end of the month.
I'm not a disgruntled driver, I'm just scared of Covenant and what they can do to end my carrier.

Not only your career, but also your
    health and even your life.

Camping out in a cold Big truck in freezin' weather
isn't good for ANY of those things. :biggrin_25512:

    (I bet Covenant's offices are heated.) :biggrin_25511:

MGASEL yes the Cb should have been on by you.Not your trainer sleeping in back. The Cb has always been and always be a saftey tool. The sad thing these days is ipods,mp3 players, and sat.radio are more important than Cb radio. you would of possibly known about that accident 15 miles before you got there. I do agree about evasive moves can be more dangerous then allowing the hit (do you swerve to avoid the deer or just take the hit). There could have been a family in a 4 wheeler next to you and forced them into another Big truck. So many possibility's,so many answers. Remeber what they say about hindsight.

A friend sliced a side wall in a very tight left turn. It was either the curb or the tree, he chose the curb. Well Covenant reported an accident with damages on his DAC. :biggrin_25520:

..and he said it woke his trainer up when he hit the brakes! This was daytime so what was the trainer doin' sleepin' in the bunk anyway, he was supposed to be in the passenger seat watchin' his 'trainee'!? .. sounds like this trainer was running a team truck & not acting as a trainer.. :biggrin_25512:
