I'm a hobby trucker (I rebuild and drive em for giggles, not income) that is currently seperated from my truck. Recenly relocated to SoCA from Washington state and didn't have the resources to get my old beast down here at the time.
So! I'm lookin for a means to get the beast down here w/o dealing with a load of shady brokers. Nobody in the auto shipping industry deals with shipping larger vehicles and they're just gonna contract it out to a trucker anyway, so I wanted to see if there's a way to get ahold of someone haulin empty/partial flatbed or lowboy from Seattle area to Bakersfield CA. Need about 20' and 10Klbs of space.
If so let me know and I'll post dimensions, weight, all that fun stuff. If I'm barkin up the wrong tree, lemme know that too!
James
Is there a way to find empty/light load trucks lookin for a load?

My brother-in-law hauls LTL Flatbed out of Tacoma that might be able to help you. If you'd like, I could PM you my e-mail and get you his contact info.

Tacoma may be a bit out of the way for the pickup location (truck is up on Whidbey Island), but sure, couldn't hurt to see what he has to say, thanks.

Several of the RV transport companies like Quality Transport have drivers in their driveaway division that drive RV's to dealers . If the truck is in good drivable condition you might get someone to drive it to you .

Now there's a thought. Altho it would take someone with a special kind of insanity to drive that beast 1200 miles.
I was thinking about driving it down in the spring if I had to, but 3 days drive at least, and not exactly a comfy ride.
Imagine it if you will: No radio, heat that "sort of works", lots of drafts, LOUD, and tops out at 60MPH. Poor bugger would want alot more than the usual fare, I would!
Still, good option, I'll have a look at that. thanks!scottied67 Thanks this. -
Essential data:
Haul from: Oak Harbor WA, 98277 (approx 2 hours drive North of Seattle), may be able to get it to Mount Vernon/Burlington WA for pickup.
Haul to: Bakersfield CA, 93311
Load: '56 GMC 2-ton dump truck. Running and fully operational, current lisencing and commercial insurance.
-Dimensions: 20'Lx7'6"Hx7'10"W (approx same size as a full size 4x4 dualie pickup truck, just uglier)
-Weight: 9,600lbs
Date range: Not fixed, truck stored at our vaction place in WA, so whenever we can get something set.scottied67 Thanks this. -
You could use a flatbed or step deck butyou would have to find someone with ramps.

How far will that thing go on a tank of fuel ?
scottied67 Thanks this. -
Thomas> There's a few places not far from where the truck is that have loading docks, better yet I can use the warehouse dock at the Navy base by our house. As for offloading I could probably offload it at my workplace as we have two transfer warehouses and a couple cargo docks.
RickG> Not far enough!
The gears are the real killer, 8.5:1 in high range. Unloaded it gets about 9.5 MPG at 55-60 MPH, & the tank is only 16 Gal. If I was going to drive it, or have it driven, I'd probably get a fuel drum and a hand pump to put in the box for quick refueling w/o having to find a service station.scottied67 Thanks this. -
Guys, thanks for the input, but it seems I'm gonna have to sell my old truck. Was terminated today, and I'm gonna need the money from he truck more than I'll ever need the truck itself (cant becompetitive with an old beast like that these days, esp. w. the cost to licence and insure it in CA!).
I appreciate those folks that chimed in, but looks like I'll be out of the truckin biz for a while longer, maybe a whole lot longer.
Joy!scottied67 Thanks this.
