I want to know if this is just a super slow time of the year or what? Another driver who works for the same company i do, says he is getting 3100 miles a week, and has a great DM. Now either he is BSing everyone, OR what he is saying is true, and the DM i have, just SUCKS.

Question is....how does a newbie driver go about asking for a new DM? How does a newbie driver explain to his DM that he isnt getting enough miles to pay the bills, and needs to do something...?

Do DMs realize that they are there to work for the driver?? or do most DMs have this "GOD complex" like they control drivers destinys?

i am lucky if i get 1800 miles a week. What happens, is i get a 700 mile load, but they give me 3 days to get it there. then i sit for a day, then i get a 600 mile load....then the same thing....give me 2 days to get it there, then i sit for another day.

My DM has the habbit of saying, "i'm looking out for you, here is my game plan..."....which sounds good for the first 5 seconds, but then end up sitting most of the weekend till he gets back.

i want a new DM, one that will actually find me miles, work with planners, etc....but i dont want to come off as a complainer, and then get screwed out of the good runs that i do get, and not get a DM switch anyways.

Talk to your fleet manager (your dm's boss). I doubt he's getting 3100 miles a week consistently. Perhaps he's stretching it a bit? If i get 2500 I'm ecstatic. Normally it's a little over 2000 per with the occasional 15-1800 mile week and the occasional 28-3000 week which is rare to get week in and week out. Yes freight is hellishly slow right now.

first responce to panhandlepat, i do call the customer directly and i always unload early if i can. I try to load early if i can. the sooner i can get loaded and unloaded from a run, the sooner i can get another load, and the more miles i can make.

I have yet to see a 2000 mile week. the most ive got has been 1880. I thought my last check was going to be pretty good, seeing how i had a run from Iowa City, IA to Denver, and a few other runs, i thought i was looking at close to $500......much to my suprise, it was almost $250. Cant live on $1000 a month. I'll go back to working at the truck stop where i was making twice that.

It gets better man just hang in there. Your pay increases will come soon and help out. I started at .26 and am at .35 now. Been with em' a little over a year and I ran pretty good all year until Novemeber.

December was better than November without a doubt. You have good and bad weeks man, just the way it goes. 1880 isn't really bad right now to be honest. I'm just giving you my experience for the last year. I would usually run around 2200 a week most weeks. I had a couple of really bad weeks in the summer because of breakdown of my first truck and it kept giving me probs.

Seems to me some weeks are sugar and other are ####. Just the way the cookie crumbles.

Early loading and unloading when possible is always the best thing to do. It just sucks when you do and still cant get another load. I usually call reciever right after i pick up to see about early unld. How did you only get 250 bux are you getting paid like 17cpm lol

    ok...gross pay was $382.98, net was $241.43. i ran 4 loads with miles that were 810, 292, 142 and 54. 1298 miles...

not to mention i have $40 coming out every week for schooling, which i can understand. but getting 1300 miles a week just isnt cutting it.

I highly doubt any driver is getting 3000 miles a week this time of the yr or in the bad economy. Talk to your FM your DM boss or if you know the planner you can talk with him/her as well.. My trainer had a great relation with his DM and planner and never had many issues with miles(economy was much better then). But like I said this economy is rotten right now on top of that it is the slow time of the yr..

You can like suggested call the shipper/receiver and see if the load can be picked up and deliver early. I found that most will allow it so long as their not over book on either end.. Remember never turn down a load no matter how small, cause usually you dm will give you something better on the next trip. I have also found that if you get a good load and say your short on hrs to pick up or deliver, you can have the time reassigned so you can pick up/deliver when you have fresh hrs..

It's a slow time of the year for shipping, and the sagging economy is making it worse. It hasn't been this bad in probably 20 years.
How long has that other driver been with the company?

I suppose you could get in line with all the other drivers who aren't getting as many miles as they'd prefer.
And prefer to blame it all on their DM.

Do you realize that you're not the only driver who isn't getting many miles?

If you want to blame it all on your DM and request another one, don't be surprised if you're labeled a whiner, and your next DM won't be any more to your liking.
And you'll not be very popular with any DM.

Many drivers are relating the same story. And some of those drivers have many years experience.

Your DM is probably taking magic lessons on the weekend in an effort to learn how to pull loads out of a hat.

    Good luck!
But you are complaining, ....... aren't you?
.Your situation is not unique these days.

    That's a good start.
In a better economy you'd be ahead of the game.

Do you, as a newBee, really expect to just jump right in at the top with the experienced drivers?
Have you ever heard the term 'Paying your dues'?
Where did the other $250 go?
.Maybe that's what you should do.

But I wonder, ......... if you previously worked at a truck stop, why weren't you aware that this is NOT the best time to be entering the truckin' industry?
    Didn't you do ANY research?

    If not, WhY not?
If so, what are you complaining about?
It is what it is --- until it gets better, and that
could take years. Are you prepared to weather
    the storm?
If not, now is the time to cut bait and count your losses.
    If so, cowboy-up and git-'er-done.

Keeping in mind that y'all can catch more flies with sugar
    than with vinegar.

I don't know how new to driving you are but you have to understand a company is not going to give you a so called hot load that has very hard deadlines to meet. They are going to use there veterans that have allready proved there selfs. Stick in there take all loads with out any complaining be on time let them know they can trust you to make any load they give and speak by example not only by mouth. Talk to your Dm let him know you are there for him and that you need all he can give you. But becareful because when times pick up you may start getting more than you want. But be nice but firm and let them know you gotta RUN!!!!!!
