Hello everyone,
A few months ago I decided that I wanted to look into buying my own truck and become a owner operator. I am in great standing with the compnac I work for, but there as been some major changes that has happened that has made me want to go in a different path.
My question is will companies agree to hire me as a lease driver before I buy a semi or do I needed to have one already.
I know it's a stuipd question but I am nervous about purchasing a semi and not be able to put it on the road. Any information will be helpful.

I got pre-approved with the carrier I leased to when I started looking for a truck. Some companies have different requirements for the trucks they take on so it would be a good idea to at least talk to the ones you're interested in so you don't wind up buying a truck they won't accept
Paddlewagon and Scottyaaron90 Thank this. -
Stick to being a driver. You seem not to understand the basics, for example there is no such thing as a lease driver, you are either a contractor through truck ownership or through working for an owner and an employee when you work for the carrier directly.

That's what I was wondering about. And I know that certain companies want the trucks to be a certain year, like 2000 and newer. Thanks for your responseSlowpoke KW Thanks this.

When I say "leased" I am referring to what you are calling a "contractor". I see plenty of trucks on the road with leased to with another company's name dot number etc.

Pick up the phone and call those you are interested in. Ask for recruiting and see what they tell you. Companies change their requirements as needed. If they want to add 100 trucks, they may be lax on the age of the truck. Or they may only need a few and only want newer. You won't know for certain til you pick up the phone .

Don't put the cart before the horse do some research on some companies and find out what year truck they accept and and how much they pay and if they pay for plates and ifta taxes and so on it's a big risk buying a truck so take it slowly and do some research might even consider being a company driver for a company first then you can find out what kind of company they truly are and get some feedback from the owner operator

I looked into buying a truck years ago. Truck sales lot was encouraging me to lease the truck onto his list. He said they would give letter to finance company stating they would put me on.
I couldnt figure if he was trying to help me or scam me. I walked.
Been company driver since. House paid off, good health insurance, 401k in mid 6 figures. Glad I stayed company. Got about 18 months till Im done with the working life.Paddlewagon and Western flyer Thank this. -
Have considered definitely staying a company driver just because of the money I am making. More then what I made in the military and way more then what I made turning wrenches. I am not rushing going out on my own yet. Just trying to gain as much knowledge as I can before I sign my name on more loan paperwork.

Just make sure you have a good amount saved and bills current. I know the business also make sure you if married have a understanding because sometimes things can go not as planned in the trucking business.
