It would appear that once you start with any of the mega companies your butt becomes their property and they pretty much tell you when and when not you can take time off. If you can find a smaller company that has a good reputation go with them with the mega's your just a number a statistic on a computer screen the smaller home town companies get to know you on a more personal basis i worked for one such firm in northern UT in a place called Logan we ran for the reefer division we all personally knew our dispatchers we got to see the "Boss" Larry Miller on day to day week to week basis we usually always got 2 1/2 days off every week from late Thursday to about Mid-day Saturday when our loads were usually ready however as a driver you could choose to wait till Sunday to leave which was more than enough time to drive through to LA for a Monday morning time slot at the Cosco warehouse.bzinger and Dave_in_AZ Thank this.

Fleet managers (Dispatcers) are very parasites when it comes to allowing home time.
We are gone 3 months and expect 10 days minimum. Left alone. No phone calls no messaging, no mailing no second driver coming to collect our empty with his own empty. None of that BS. We are home. They have 1000 other drivers they can call on.
I made one mistake taking a load to memphis from Little Rock after waiting ALL day and half the night at the stupid yard for it to be ready. What I should have done was told dispatch to put another tractor on it while we hit the sleeper. (Our house was 20 minutes away but we didnt feel safe to go that far...) But no he says no other driver availible. Therefore that load has to run.
That load did not make it on time. It was late by hours, half a day actually. Unacceptable. Now they find a dozen drivers willing to take the load on in. HA....
Not anymore it aint. It's just going to sit. If they really weally seriously have a driver to go fetch it, they will make it happen. Not us. We have been up waiting too #### long and are unsafe.
We used to run 9 months of the year say end of feb through late october. Then stay home a whole winter. Let someone else deal with the snows. while we enjoy steak and eggs in the morning on our accumulated savings. The holiday season is like a sickness, it slows everything down national. They can have it. Call us with a load out come spring.
I once was assigned a hotel during christmas week in Texarkana of all places. And about a thousand dollars that could not really be spent on anything. A few smokes maybe, a couple of meals ho hum. Nothing really exciting to celebrate christmas far from home that year. I consider that a lost holiday.
This is only possible when you have very good neighbors who look after your home now and then making sure all is in order.
One time we spent three days visiting brother and his family in NW indy. Supposedly our time off. We made the mistake of informing dispatch that's family we were visiting up there. We never saw indy again.
Never never never never tell dispatch a #### thing. You are off for three days in indy and then SHUT UP. They have a thousand other drivers passing through there to handle whatever comes up. What part of off on vacation does dispatch not understand?
I hate to be difficult. If it is one thing I learned from my Arkansas Co workers locally, is when you are OFF duty for the day YOU VANISH. You don't go home. You get the boat out onto the lake two hours away and enjoy your evening undisturbed.Last edited: Apr 23, 2018
