You have to go OTR for the first 2 yrs to get a local job is a myth!!! A myth that most drivers or otr recruiters tend to preach to new comers in the industry.
There are several companies that will hire localy fresh out of school.
And some will hire you then train you the way that they want you to operate there equipment. Instead of going through a mega company for schooling or a technical school. -
Thank you for your response. All the company I see in indeed is asking for trucking experience of a year...
Also I will be able to pay thru school for a military program but after that I want to make 50-75k which I know is asking for alot so I'm fine with with working somewhere where I can make the most money as posbile. So how much would I make otr first year vs working at a locally company? -
Many companies will waive the experience requirement, especially if they like you.
Finding a local job as a rookie is not impossible, just harder to do. Finding a local job as a rookie that pays well is harder still. For one, you have to get specialized, so I would forget about vans. Try tanker work. Most OTR tankers would be considered regional in van companies for instance.
Local work is typically, at least in my experience, much harder work than OTR. I hate it.fordconvert and Western flyer Thank this. -
Agreed !!! I hate local "trucking" too ...too much BS to deal with every day.
OTR is definitely not required to drive local. Daycab trucks are a different animal along with multiple pickup and deliveries EVERY day.Trucking in Tennessee, fordconvert, ethos and 1 other person Thank this. -
I rather do otr for a year or 2 before me and my wife have kids. I'm fine with working harder if I can be home on at nights and weekends
-
I would say that your asking for a lot. But rather your not selling yourself short. If you know what you want. Then don't settle for less!
As far as what can be made. I'm not sure, that would depend on different things including you. I don't know that many otr outfits that pay better than local. But then again I completely hate otr. However people like what they like.
I know loves will hire you straight out of school. Depending on if the regional manager wants to try you out.you can make about 60k plus on there refined side (fuel hauling). -
14 on, 10 off. Repeat, repeat, repeat.
Trucking in Tennessee, Buster Churry, bottomdumpin and 1 other person Thank this.
