I have a Cobra 29 wx nw st in my ford ranger and attached to it is a 10" base load rubber duck from workman. It says the antenna is tuneable and pre tuned to the lowest SWR.
Ive tryed using the onboard meter but when I switch from CAL to SWR the meter doesnt swing back to where it is supposed too. The Weather bands work fine but I can't receive anything on the CB.
Im kinda new to CBs so please bare with me.
Thanks for your help!

First go get a real antenna that is not much of antenna and is not going to work on your CB at all. Try any one of the base loaded or center loaded antennas on the market.
-
Run down to the local radio shack or truck stop. And pick up a K40 with a magnet mount.
Your rubber duck antenna won't ever do a good job. Complete waste of money. -
even a lil will would be a huge step up from that antenna .

Thanks for all of the replys!
I guess I need some help picking out an antenna. I don't want a really tall one because that would look rediculouse on a mid sized pick up. So I would rather not go with the K40. Would a cobra A1000 work? That lil wil looks pretty good but a little tall for my likings.
If worst comes to worst Ill get a lil wil but Ide rather get soemthing a little shorter.
Why wont my antenna work? It says it is base loaded.
Thanks for all of your help! -
Ever seen a base loaded antenna at a television station? Especially a 2300 foot antenna?
Higher is better. Metal is better.
If you're looking for simple. A Francis 4 foot will do the job. You could go with a 3 ft if you so mind. It's fiberglass, but it's also one of the most reliable antenna avaliable. And cheap too. About $15
Then you can put some quality coax on it.
Instead of the chicken wire they provide with most base loaded magnetic base antennas.

So if I get a Francis so I still need to buy a mount and Coax for it?
and Will the Cobra A1000 work with my radio?
Does the Francis have weather band?
Thanks for the help danc694u! -
It will work, to a degree. But remember, you get what you pay for.
You paid for a magnet, coax, and the antenna. $14.95 retail. How much of that do you think actually went into the antenna? About 75 cents, maybe.
The Francis will receive weather band, so long as you have it on your CB. And yes, you will have to buy a mount and coax for a Francis.
That's why I suggested the Magnet mount K40 to begin with. While the coax isn't as good as some. It's certianly better than what you have. And, the antenna is much better.
Admittedly, the antenna itself probably cost about $1.50 But there is much more in the base load and coax design. And the overall height is much higher, for better performance. Than the Cobra A1000. -
So how far would the francis work for?
and how far would the cobra work for?
Could I build a magnetic mount for the fracis?
And what should I be looking at when purchasing an antenna? -
let me get this right, so you say the antenna is tuneable and comes pre tuned?
i would reccommend the lil wilson or the wilson 1000 mag if you want a mag mount. the lil wil is 38in and the 1000 is 66in.
