If you grew up in this area and know your way around ny, nj, and pa. Then it is easy. Dont ######## drivers on how easy it is for people new to the area.
I moved to PA two years ago. I have driven truck in Chicago, Minneapolis, St. Loius, and Indianapolis.
I will never drive a truck in new york city...
I will not drive a truck again in Philly on a friday. PA is ok to drive in, but philly is a pain in the ###. Got routed through philly on a friday....sat for 4 hours in traffic. I dont need that. Wont be going back for seconds of that.
If you do interstate driving in the northeast, it is not bad. Short on ramps and off ramps can be managed. It all depends on where you have to deliver and how deep you have to go into a city.DSK333 Thanks this. -
I drive it every day and I couldn’t agree more. Philly is the toughest city I’ve ever driven a truck in. I hate it. Even after all these years. Manayunk and Roxborough suck to. I’ll take NYC over Philly- even though Philly is where I live and play and know it better than the back of my hand.
Don’t sweat the NE. Sure, parts of it are more challenging than others but that’s just like anything. It’s all doable. Take your time.Brettj3876, dogtrucker and bzinger Thank this. -
Don't forget OP you have lots of resources here from people that will jump all over helping you and don't be afraid to post a ?
After 30 years I still call on my pals when I'm scratching my head and if they don't know somebody else does .
There's people here from Boston to Baltimore .Dumdriver Thanks this. -
if you can drive in Dallas Austin houston or Atlanta you can drive around the north east

Well I grew up in Pennsylvania and I spend a lot of time driving out west actually before I came back and drove into New York City and all that sort of thing.
I certainly would not say that traveling the Northeast is easy, especially if you are not from here. Philadelphia is a city that was designed for horse and buggy not tractor trailer. There are plenty of tiny streets and one-way streets and they're just generally is not a lot of room.
When you start getting into North Jersey and up towards New York the people just drive like they're absolutely insane. I grew up here and I still couldn't believe it when I went to New York and I saw how crazy everyone was. And it's not just New York it's north Jersey and New York. When you get up into Connecticut and go further it seems a little better.
But even if you go to Boston. Boston is a lot like Philadelphia. These are the oldest cities in America and they really were not built for tractor trailers.
On the flip side if you do travel through there and get used to it it's okay. But you have to look at it like a sense of adventure or you're up for the challenge or else I think it would just make you mental.
But if you have that type of an attitude that it's a challenge and you're willing to stand up to it and take the adventure you'll be fine.
Just be careful if you have to go into New York City because there are places that you will back into in New York City that you would never believe you're going to back into there. New York City the height signs for the bridges are wrong and it's a little tricky up there but once you get in your groove you're fine.DSK333, rbrtwbstr, dogtrucker and 1 other person Thank this. -
The farthest east i go is Ohio the farthest north i go is North Carolina. I dont touch PA NY NJ. I have a freind that is from PA and says he will not go within 50 miles of Los Angeles. I laugh. I dont even turn on my gps anywhere in LA or inland empire. Zip around like its nothing and tell other drivers where all the parking is. So much of this is where did you grow up , where did you live , where are you most comfortable. I dont care how much $$$ some drivers clame to make no truckung job pays enough to get your blood pressure up to much or to feel unsafe or unsure. Biggest problem with new drivers they dont yet know they can say no.
Paddlewagon and dogtrucker Thank this. -
There are other options - it's a big decision.
Also considering Clean Harbors - same $ potential. Or maybe Van Eerden - not quite as much $ but excellent benefits, nicer trucks, no NE and trips out West (which I miss).
I talked with General Manager of Experior this morning. I learned that while the pay is indeed about as expected, the benefits are very thin and the medical is expensive. Also, he said it's about 70% NE round trips from Chicago area now but that will decrease in Summer.bzinger Thanks this. -
For me it's those bridges with no signs that just look iffy - my nav says it's safe but that's no excuse if you hit it.
I figure if there's not damage from previous collisions, it must be over 13 6. -
And if it has shark teeth painted on it, look out!
