Met this clown on the dam across Lake Whitney in Texas.
We were 16’6” wide, he was 18’ wide, the road was 30’ wide.
Him & his crew weren’t running on the common channel, therefore nobody knew they were about to cross the dam, or we would have held up to let him cross. His lead escort should have come across & shut down traffic, but that didn’t happen either
We ended up backing up 3/4 of a mile off the dam to let him by.
Well at his width, crossing the dam requires a police escort in order to shut down traffic & allow him the needed room. He would have known that, had they actually had a permit.
An hour later, 4 miles of traffic backed up in each direction, TX DPS thanked us for our cooperation, held traffic up for us to clear the dam & were having a field day with the 3 ring circus.
Don’t be this guy!!!

Could turn in to NO You Move, Oversize loads tend to thing they should get some extra privilege. You did the right thing or you'd still be sitting on top the dam
NavigatorWife, Oxbow and DSK333 Thank this. -
The unwritten rule is, the bigger load wins, unless it’s safer for the bigger load to back out.
As far as thinking we should get some extra privilege goes, some may think that way, I do my best to keep the inconvenience of my presence to a minimum, but if I need the room, I will take it.stwik, WildTiger1990, Feedman and 6 others Thank this. -
Should your escort have crossed over ahead of you? Or should his have gone over because his width made problems in the opposite lane, while yours didn't?
-
Usually, once a load goes over 17ft wide, it hits superload status. Whole different set of rules for that 18 wide when compared to the 16’6. He didn’t have a permit, so he didn’t know the rules. He was supposed to have LEOs shut the bridge down.
@soloflyr , did they give out any driving awards?LoneCowboy, cke, soloflyr and 1 other person Thank this. -
@TripleSix
Yes they did give them a trophy or two or three. The trooper was already mighty ticked when he first stepped out of the car, it went downhill fast once he figured out what was happening.
The ringmaster, a.k.a lead escort, looked like she was probably the company receptionist pressed into service for this load. Her front sign was strung across her headlights, grill & license plate. Her strobe light looked light it ran on AAA batteries & they must have been weak.
The driver pulled as far right as he could in a feeble attempt to squeeze past the first truck. Then once we cleared the bridge, rather than ease off of the wall, he cranked the wheel hard left & smacked the wall with the tail swing.
Ringling Brothers would have proud of their clown college graduates. -
We cross that dam regularly, never had a problem because of a simple thing called communication. We are broadcasting long before we get on the approach & our lead car will run ahead to get vehicles over & or stop anything that might be a conflict. But we’ve always had communication with anything coming from the other direction & either we or they stopped to let the other clear the dam.
These morons should have had a police escort to stop oncoming traffic & shut down the road before they hit the approach. At the very least, their lead escort should have run across & stopped it.
Our lead stopped us when he saw them coming up the approach of the dam, he tried to stop them but all he got in response was a howdy hand wave. Then once they saw us, they kept coming & almost hit the first tank before finally stopping. They would have taken the eaves & roof off the mobile home if they didn’t stop at that point.
Then we had to wait for the cops to get there to shut down traffic & clear the road behind us before we could do anything. -
It blows my mind that there are people trying to run outlaw with OSOW. Seriously???
TripleSix, QuietStorm, Streetroddreams and 1 other person Thank this. -
When you say common channel, do you mean 19? Or is there a common channel for OD loads?
