    The canopy jettison that the RIO has is so that he can punch out, and not punch out the pilot. Once he jettisons the canopy, the ejection system has isolated his seat. If he activates his seat with the canopy still locked, he and the pilot both go.

    The pilot activates his seat, they both are going. A) No ones flying the aircraft now. B) The RIO goes first unless he's wearing like a 1,000,000 sun block.

    The second thing I did when a Tomcat landed, was pin those seats and the system, so no one accidentally activated while in the ####pit.

    I forgot the date, but my last year at Edwards I was assisting the base security police helping with duty during an air show that involved the Thunderbirds when they were flying the T 38s. The number 1 that day was an Air Force Officer named David Smith. This guy about a year later died in Ohio when his ejection seat malfunctioned. His Crew Chief survived. I will always remember this guy because he gave me a personalized autograph. (punching out) of an aircraft is dangerous.
