I don't know if they were independent slide or not. I didn't talk to them just overheard part of their conversation since the place was pretty quiet at the time. I did notice that he had a lot of tail swing, more than a 53' flat does. I've never put any thought into what he was saying.
tandem or spread axle

What about a 14' spread over 4 axles?
-
Ohio your allowed 40k on 10 foot spread. Now add dump to rear and it turns alot faster, and easier on tires. Spread rides better than tandem. I have a spread flat bed, thinking about a spread van. No more sliding tandem. If u like to do tight u turns with out dump valve, they eat tires.

You are allowed 40k on a spread in TN also, but you still can’t be over 80k gross.
You can permit up to 46k on a closed tandem in TN, if you have a overweight permit.Oxbow Thanks this. -
One consideration is that the rules for spreads in Canada (at least the provinces I run in the West), are, well, odd. You can carry LESS on a spread than a tandem.
Oxbow Thanks this. -
Can you still carry more than the states though?
-
Spread will ride better.
jamespmack and skellr Thank this. -
Spread is seen as 1 axle
So the 10'1" is only good for 9100 kg or 20000 pounds total
Making it useless in Manitoba and west
Steer 5500 kg
Tandem 17000 kgOxbow Thanks this. -
No it doesnt change gross on 80k plates. However you can get a heavy haul permit in Ohio. Used to get up to 105k on 5 axles, 42 foot trailer but its been awhile since I bought one. Seem to think someone on here stated that it is higher now idk
