Yes you can. You can choose to work for a carrier who pays on 1099 and treats you as a contractor, or you can choose to work for a carrier who treats you as an employee and withholds and pays on W2
How is this 1099 stuff legal?

Ive had enough trouble there as it is already just from existing inside chiraq. West central comes to mind as does south markets. Calumet in partiucar or Highland near the railroad yards.
One time Dennys people (Customers and staff of a certain race) was throwing a hissy fit and I was not served at the counter there for three hours. That was time that you could not get back. and the last time I touch a dennys outside of US 50/13.
I can go on but Chicago has always been a battle.
As far as social security, the next generation will do well to run 1099 and so long they do better than 30% more on pay weekly than what they would have gotten under W2. Social security might not be around or cut massively by then.
The IRS does have all the power to any American any where on earth now. So... if you are a citizen living in say Basal Switzerland, your banks will be having to do extra paperwork to IRS to report your money flow for example. And if you did not pay attention to your taxes etc. They can take, freeze, garnish and so on everything in your world until the back taxes are satisfied. I don't think too many are trained in our public schools about money and what's coming to them soon as they get out when graduation.
Ive bought a truck one time years ago, that would have been a 1099. It was a very much of a opportunity at that time in that work. I would with a company in a 4 year period be paid off and hopefully by then running on my own.
I know that I have been very careful against newbies signing 1099's in the past. But due to the niggarly company pay that is stuck at 0.32 as it has been since the 80's you might as well learn our great american tax system, what is expected of you under 1099 and get to it yourself. The W2 system is no longer paying adequately. It's that simple.tscottme, Mr_Rick I and Oldironfan Thank this. -
Okay where do I sign ??? Sold Sold Sold....Hehehehehe inside of a few short weeks I will be settling for 8k-12k 'Grand' per week. Hmmm !

Maybe some of you can tell me if this was a proper 1099 job I do not work at any more. Here is the details.
%25 load pay avg of $1500 per week to me. But 50% of it was dead head and weekly miles were near 4000 miles.
I was supposed to sign a contract that I would pay for any damage to the truck that company " believed" was my fault.
Than I was told to quit for being less than an hour late to the contract broker consignee. Due to trailer issue could not slide tandem on the 12 year old reefer. So was trying to avoid every scale for 1000 mile delivery. And I was not allowed to find my own loads. -

) I agree and you are spot on about how the pay and compensation is not uniform at all and the recruiters are spitting out figures and fringe benefits and bonus potentials as if there are gold nuggets scattered all along the highway and they will show you where they are located and how to scoop them up ! Ahem...I also know of some 'Prime' Ocean front property in Arizona for sale at $100/acre. Pun intended...

First the weight problem. If you couldnt cat the truck legal 10 miles from shipper why didnt you rework it there?
And possibly gone to a shop and had that rail and tandems fixed so they will slide? Even a bar of soap or W2 on those rusted rails will slide em.
Avoiding scales? tsk tsk tsk. I hate to be difficult. But what I am getting at is at the first moment there is A PROBLEM... STOP everything and fix it first. at the shipper. Or at the shop near the shipper. Or call boss, have him send a second truck a rental box or something grab some of your freight. 4 pallets or something and GO once you cat Legal. Worry about fixing trailer after delivery (And maybe getting boss to buy a replacement)
Im not your opponet. Ive done things with weights and state scales before that I do not feel good about to this day.
Anything above that? Well...you made a hero run and were still late and then fired for it. And accepting the risk for all damage to the truck? Whatever happened to insurance on the carrier? Do you own the whole thing or does the Boss? (Probably running out on any future smashes you might do...)
I can go on, I think I better shut up, every run is a problem to begin with and it's not done until empty and signed for with money in hand and paid. Many plates rotating on stalks in the old TV shows back in the 70's keep a mind on everything.Oldironfan Thanks this. -

Haul cheap, haul heavy, haul in such a manner you have to avoid scales driving needless amounts of miles......
If you can not get through a scale you have no business on a public road.
