My annual permit allows up to 135,000 on 7 axles for most highways, higher on the interstate. my lightweight is 43,000 +/-. The problem that I have is that I can only go about 14,000 on my steers, so I am going to be up to 61,000 on each of the three axle groups. This restricts me to only our "Black Route" highways, which allow 70,500 on a tridem. The machine we are looking at is a variable gauge machine as well, which adds some weight.
The Cat Handbook says that it should weigh 108,000 fully dressed. With the counterweight off it says I should shed 19,780 pounds, and if we remove the bucket (no quick coupler) I am guessing another 5,000 lbs. (72" 3.5 cy bucket). which leaves 83,220, and I have no problems. I would venture though that it is a bit heavier than that.
So, I'm faced with adding a fourth axle and/or spreader bar, which Aspen cannot verify that the trailer was built to accommodate, or buying a bigger lowboy. I am likely to look into an older 2+2+2, or 2+3+1 and keep our current lowboy for all the smaller stuff.BigBob410, OLDSKOOLERnWV, SAR and 2 others Thank this. -

What you see here is the joint between the bucket and the stick. It’s not sitting on a crossmember.
Instead, this is what is bearing the weight of the boom.
That’s what @Oxbow is talking about, and I don’t like it either. Hydraulic cylinders don’t take kindly to being side loaded in this way.3noses, HighCountry, BigBob410 and 3 others Thank this.
