I too am in the same boat....
15 years experience then went into sales.
Quit that job and started my own company which isn't making it.
Now I'm looking for work and they won't hire me to drive.
Even tried to buy my own truck and sign on with a company
as an OO but they wouldn't hire me on because I didn't have
any recent experience.......SUCKS and I am hungry

Attention employers: We now require a valid DOT# for anyone wishing to post a driving position. If your job offer doesn't contain a DOT number, it will not get past moderation and will not appear in the forum. The other requirements in the sticky at the top of this section are still required as well. Thank you for understanding.

Too bad trucking CAN NOT be treating like any other profession. If a lawyer or surgeon did not practice for 5 yrs, do you think they have to go back to school? I am sure all they need would be to re-certified or renew their license. In another post involving a Swift School, I have read how the trucking schools are just a scam that the government created to make more money. I never thought about it that way, luckily professional drivers are out there to point that out that were driving before the scam of HAFTO going to a school was not necessary.
I went through a trucking school in FL in 1998 & luckily the T/A of the Navy paid 100% or I would have felt scammed as well. I did learn what I needed to know to drive a truck, but do not think it was worth $5600 at the time, a professional out there like the current drivers like you could have done the same for me training wise.1pissedoffdriver Thanks this. -
this is very hard to explain this to people out there..
America is one big business and the government is the "mafia"
its based on extortion.but the government uses
"legal extortion"...
This is only another one of the "tactics" they use to legally embezzle money from the working man or woman...
The writing is on the wall.i have watched this for 22 years now and its sickening to see are government continue to rob the profits of a truck driver...there is no end in sight...
Pretty soon we will have to wear a d.o.t. Approved jock strap or be fined....

I don't know what the problem is, but it seems that if a company has trainer,s that they could put someone with experience with them.the only reason is they get a trainee cheaper. also it is the possibility that the insurance companies are involved. not having current experience does not make any sense.i have a private pilot,s license,if i haven't flown for years all i have to do is find a instructor to get me current.how long it takes is up to me.as for buying a truck, no way. and if you had a truck, and they still said you didn't have any current experience, that's BS! when i told one co that i was in business as a trucker, they wanted my last two year,s tax records, AND at least 4 account invoices of verifiable customers! ridiculous!!!

Well, I quit OTR years ago to take care of my ailing father with the idea of never going back to trucking. Worked computer related jobs for a while. All of them temp jobs. Then got on with ProDrivers. They are a driver leasing company. They lease you out as a temp driver. Very flexible. When I was working for them they had lots of work. Fortunately I did some some OTR for them, which got me into US Xpress. Wish I stayed with ProDrivers, but then again I might be laid off, sitting at home like some of you folks, instead of stitting in a terminal making $0. So, check into driver leasing. Seems they appreciate folks with experience, who can actually back a trailer.
And as for 1pissedoffdriver, when do you see consumers willing to pay an extra dime on the products or services they buy? How many consumers look for, or even care where their product was made? This is (or at least should be) a free market. I blame the consumers!!! I can't stand US Xpress, but I would imagine the profits of big companies like USX are down. And I'm sure the more the government does to fix it, the worse the economy will be, since the government had a hand in causing this situation.
As for OTR experience, USX claims it only hires the top 15% of drivers. Funny Landstar turned me down for not enough recent OTR experience. Maybe I can try again next year. -

I drove farm equipment, Tractors, Cement trucks, Dump trucks, Cranes, but I still had to go to school and start at the bottom. I understand.
