I have been out of school since July of 2008. I worked for PTL for one month or so (from Sept. 08 - Oct. 08). Gave it up due to my husband being my trainer and us not seeing eye to eye most of the time. Was wondering if I would have to take a refresher course if i wanted to get back behind the wheel of the big rig?

Me thinks if you can't get along with a spouse/trainer it's gonna be a rough ride in a trainers truck.... You will have basicly no driving exp.
-
Did you finish training? Or did you bail before it was complete?
You have 2 strikes against you essentially, if you didn't complete training.
My guess is, you are going to have a tough time. I realize some husbands and wives can't work together. But that would be a huge red flag for me, as a trainer. -
I just got my CDL A in November 08. It took 2 months to find a job. I start with Sygma on the 19th. The ONLY place that would even talk to me right now. Gonna be hard work but miles are miles at this stage in the game.
Can anyone tell me if getting into 6 states would count as otr? -
No it will not. I'm not sure where they draw the line. But I know 6 states isn't enough. Especially when some companies say 25 isn't enough.
-
Hey Trucking? are you going to CTDTS or the other one in Charlotte?
-
I know when my husband went OTR the company he went with took his 3 state routes from previous employer as enough...they also took into consideration his past military expreience. At that time they said they were looking to see if being away from home was an issue for him/us not how many states he had actually been in with a rig.
I think each company sets their own guidelines for what they consider OTR experience but that they also look at other factors when deciding to hire or not hire a driver. My husband has been a driver for over 20 years and I think that plays into the situation too. -

Anyone know about the canadian markets? I imagine if the U.S is in teh crapper, I'm sure canada is worse off, no? I start school in a week, only have to pay 128 for the 6 month course. Will be getting 600 hrs of driving time, is this going to be of any help in getting a job?

I'm actually going to York Tech in Rock Hill. Most of the courses were 4 weeks so I thought with their course being 6 weeks maybe I would learn a little more. Plus, I was able to take that heavy equipment course at Tech. To everybody else, thanks for the kind and harsh words. I wanted honest opinions regardless of it being good or not. To reply to some, that 26k figure was the MOST I made in a year. Last year I only made 21k and it was detailing cars by the way. I was so miserable not to mention I don't want to be 45 cleaning cars. I had to make a rash decision so I left. Even if delivering pizzas was my career choice, I'm happier now then I was before. I guess my point is I'm not going in to this with dollar signs in my eyes or some dream of traveling the countryside. My wife has a good job with the government so its not going anywhere. I just need something I can live with that can supplement her that I can consider a career. Cleaning cars was not a career in my opinion. The training being free was a blessing for sure. I was going to pay for school out of pocket until someone mentioned WIA to me. My concern is they want you to have a job within 3 months of training. If I'm being picky, they may try to force me into taking whatever. Guess I will see.
