I am noticing the fuel in the fuel/water separator is really dark, almost black. Thought about getting an analysis done on a sample. Rubber from old fuel lines? Any ideas? Truck also sputters on a hill. Sputtering from collapsing fuel lines? Recently replaced DPF system completely, newer style conical injectors and recent EGR valve replacement. Unrelated replacements include an air compressor and clutch job. 592,000 on truck. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

have you LOOKED in your fuel tanks....??
pull the filter and FEEL the black stuff.
if it feels slimy it algae
if it sticky like tar it's aspartame
both are a pain to got out -
its probably compression and exhaust in the fuel.

do u have long crank times or best way to install clear line in the head return and see if compression is present.

you have to install the return line from the head to the housing see thru line to see if any compression is present in the fuel system, this is volvo sickness i dont know how many times its the problem

Same problem, D13, 2010,1.1 mil miles, I spent 5500$ cad on new injectors 3 weeks ago. I replaced the water separator and fuel filter twice after injector job was done . I drove it 8000 miles, burned some fuel hopping was dirty in tanks, still the water separtor i installed Saturday gets black. I wouldn't worry about it, but my motor seems weak, doesn't pull right.
Could this be caused by something more sinister, cracked head around injector bore? -
this is not very likely if the head was cracked around the bore truck wouldn't be running to much air would get in the fuel system. so that would be out of the question. the only place they have in common between compression and exhaust is the head nothing else. other than that volvo runs fuel lines all separate.
QUALITYTRUCK and Johny41 Thank this.
