Appreciate the help and info. But that will all have to wait until the radio comes back from whichever shop I decide to send it to. And for the moment, Q5 Communications is at the top of the list. If nothing is wrong with it, great. I KNOW the trasmit/receive issue is in the coax/antenna. If there is a problem that needs fixed, better to have a good radio to work with in getting everything else done properly.

Here is another idea.....For your own benifit and if funds allow pick up an antenna analyzer..Great tool for yourself..Right now you might find a new rig expert aa30 for about 250..They are out of production i was told by a rep reciently but a great tool if dx engineering( a fav place to shop) has any..aa54 is next up for about 275 i think.. then aa35 zoom but more $ again.......A tool like that can do so many things that can save a radio down the road......I dont see them on sale for 200 but i did..Worth a look around though..

13 years of corrosion would make it difficult if not impossible to get an rf ground. Did you clean the connections?

What I did and/or did not do with the 959 in the International is sort of irrelevant at this point. I no longer run that truck.

But I will take questions regarding what was/wasn't done and turn them into tips for once I get the 959 repaired and go to install it in my current truck.

Why would you suggest 10 ga wire to run a 4 watt radio? Thats way over kill, unless RustyBolt is running an amp which he didn’t mention. The 14 ga wire he is using is just fine. A cobra 29 only uses around 1.4 amps on transmit. Thats why they only use 2 amp fuses. Theres nothing wrong running power from a fuse box if its done correctly and if it doesnt cause electrical noise in the radio. He does need to check his power wire for lose connections or corrosion, as rabbi mentioned. That would probably be a good place to start. Also is RustyBolt on rough roads a lot? These radios do have problems with cold solder joints. Should be about a $20 dollar fix if thats the case, instead of buying another radio.

    rabbiporkchop Thanks this.

Rusty, I see you are in a different truck after i just posted. At this point it will be interesting to see what Q5 found wrong with your radio. Dont be afraid to ask him questions about it.

It was an 05 Int 9200. What road isn't rough? Whole reason for going with a KW. My back and butt are already thanking me.
Like I said in the OP, I don't know jack (well, maybe a little. But not much) about the tech side of these things. I will be asking many questions to Q5, I'm sure. And then back on here asking even more.

Part of it is the length of wore to run to batterys....
Im baseing his requirements on the bigger radio....
Even so i personally always ran much thicker than required, not like it hurts anything....Dont like fuse boxes cause to much goin to one spot to create noise an how many know how to do it correctly....
Either way,its my 2cts worth,no one has to like it or use my suggestion..

So......night stalker...Whats your suggestions for why his radios dont last assumeing its not ant related...
