Practical. Much better than zip to zip but still not 100% all miles.

    Jblaw15 Thanks this.

If you're planning on running OTR, you won't even notice the miles you aren't getting paid for. It's so nominal that it's barely worth mentioning. There will be runs where you'll actually run a little less than what you get paid for. Happened to me all the time.

True, and on top of that, if you prefer to run a route that sucks down some out of route miles nobody ever says #### to you about it (there were plenty of times I went a way that was 25 miles or so longer in mileage but way faster in time), so personally it all evens out, if not comes out in your favor at the end of the day.

True. One time I was routed from Albany, NY area to Wisconsin via I88 & then I86 to avoid I90 (NYS Thurway w/tolls across the whole state) - SJ I know that you know about I90 in New York, putting it out there for original poster.

I mapped out the trip and sure enough the paid miles were for the thruway route. The route to keep me off the thruway was about 40 miles longer. I pointed that out and that it was excessive unpaid miles. They placed a way point city that is along I86 in the suggested route which brought the paid miles to reality.

The only real issue I ever had was dead heading from that beer distributor in downtown Cincinnati after a delivery to just outside the city to a paper recycling place for a load to Cherokee, AL. It was 19 unpaid deadhead miles because the address for the recycling place was a Cincinnati one even thought it was actually outside the city. I protested that but never got anywhere.

@Jblaw15 just remember this. Most new folks/students will focus on unpaid miles, because it looks like you aren't getting paid for work you've done. The miles aren't what matter. TIME is what matters. That is your most valuable commodity as a company driver. There are many occasions where I have added unpaid miles to my route to shorten time. Time makes you available. Time keeps you moving.
