My personal drug of choice is Airplane Mode. With Airplane Mode all my problems stop bothering me.
When I was in driving school a former student rolled in to the lot in a rental car. The instructor introduced him to us and he told us his story.
He asked us if we knew the name of a successful regional chain of restaurants nearby. Most of us did. He told us by location which of them he had stood up for the owner. If I remember it was four and they had been opened one after another over several years. They were his baby and his life for that time. He had been working every waking hour for years. Made very good money doing it. Then the last store was running and he went: Nope. I'm done.
He sold most of his stuff after he gave some of it to his adult kids and jumped in a truck. He was on home time by direction of management because he hadn't taken any in nine months or so. He told us that the best part of driving for him was shutting his phone off when he pulled out onto the road and not turning it on again until he stopped. He said the dispatchers don't like it, but screw 'em, safety first, right?
People find they need different things at different points in their lives. I can absolutely relate to the idea that shutting the phone off is the closest thing to nirvana you're likely to find.
Enjoying these threads.

I remember the 1980’s and I couldn’t wait to get an answering machine. Then the 1990’s I couldn’t wait to get caller ID / cell phone / VM. When texting started I thought it was the stupidest thing I’d seen. Remember pushing a button 4 times to get to the correct letter. I now try to communicate as much as possible via text. My voicemail says Don’t leave me a VM. Maybe 40% still left a message. Then there’s the people who text me on one of the 3 numbers I have, they send an email, and VM...plus add direct messages via Facebook and Instagram. I went and bought a new phone and just never set up VM. Lol. People are like “your voicemail doesn’t work”, and I respond “it works juuuust fine I didn’t set it up”. Hahaha.
I’m enjoying the nightmare mega carrier threads, backing nightmares, poor trainers, etc etc. it’s a great offset to my daydreams of it being 2am on stretch of highway between San Luis Obispo and Salinas heading towards Seattle. Fresh cup of coffee warming my hand with my wife knitting in the passenger seat, my son in the upper bunk sleeping away. Knowing I just started my 10 and trying to make it through San Jose and Redding before traffic wrecks my forward progress. I’d be looking forward to another cup at Dutch Bro’s coffee coming up. Listen to some good music and chatting away about life. I can drop them in Seattle with her sisters and nieces and nephews and then grab the next load and head out for a week or two. Pick them up on the downwind leg or fly them some place convenient and knock out miles and loads on the way back.
It’s a dream I know, but dreams don’t come true without putting in the work, and often in my experience life is better than dreams. You just have to pay attention to realize it.Last edited: May 12, 2018

I can't shut my smart phone off. I get about 4 health and welfare checks a day. It is my deal with my church pastor as well as several friends of mine. If I don't reply (yep) I get a cop knocking on my door. This actually happened to me last year. I passed out missed a check text and the cops had to get my landlord to let them in. I was carried via ambulance to the ER. I have a bad problem with epilepsy and am trying to stay as independent as possible. Now most people that have my phone number also know I monitor facebook. Because of this I get few texts most of this traffic is put in facebook. If you are getting calls and texts to such a degree that they become a PITA then YOU need to put a stop to it. On the android system it takes 2 taps to block a number. Make sure people know this. A cell/smart phone is a tool. learn how to use it and also learn how to stand up to the people that bug you.

Best of luck with your health. I think it’s awesome that you have a network that helps you. You're doing great and should be proud of the love/care those people give you. Stoked for you. -
Looks to me like you do have a problem. It is hell operating a business through a cell phone. I know several fleet owners that do it.
