You’ll get used to that, I have on any given week $20,000 to $25,000 in receivables outstanding. It’s part of business. I’ve never been one to factor or take quick pay either, don’t like the idea of loosing that extra money.

Agreed, short loads for me are quoted strictly based on time. And my rates for those start at $1200.

 

That is true even for company drivers. Takes the same amount of time on average to load and unload. Sometimes I think the shippers on short loads dont get in a hurry. I guess their mindset is "he's only going just up the road". I know that should not have an effect, but I think it does.

 

I can't figure some of these Wahoo's out. I see 100-200 mile loads posted for $350 - $400 dollars. Who does these loads? Somebody is doing them, they disappear off the board.

 

I wonder about that too. They have stuff posted for that, that will eat an entire day. I don't care if it's only across town or not. $1,000 or I'm not interested.

 

I’ve thought that myself. The only logical conclusion I can come up with is people who have no idea how to value their time.

Everthing else is variable (no truck payment)

 

Just the risk. Sure no problem. Phoenix is the 5th largest metro area in the nation now, probably 1 or 2 with maniacs.
So sure I'll risk everything and of course the pick up or deliver is at rush hour, and even if it's not, when I'm empty the trip back to the barn will be.
So you can make $200 maybe????

I mean I have the utmost respect for anyone making or trying to make a go of it, but you gotta do everything possible not to put yourself in that position.

Now I have taken loads for 600 or 800 a few hundred miles, only because I was going that way anyway, and had just delivered, and had a day to pick up. But I'm not gonna target that.

Power without FUEL MONEY means ZERO...

I have a measly Volvo D12 with puny 425HP, but I'm getting 7.3mpg on 76K lbs gross running up I-81 thru PA. Even grandma passes me @ 63mph. But I'm not racing anyone. I have paper-logs --> I can create time.

Also, I just installed a larger 150gal tank, which means less stopping at truck stops, plus, now, I can fuel up nearly 275 gallons at $2.71/gal, and still make a 1500 mile round trip without stressing, since I will have 50gals left to putt-putt around when I'm on "PC" line, heading home.

 

I wish I was on paper logs still but the truth of you creating time on your logs is you give your time away for nothing. Although it is frustrating as hell with no flexibility in the rules to be forced to take breaks when you're not tired or drive when you are. I have seen a LOT of that on EOBR and would gladly give away my time for FREE again to be able to use common sense when I sleep... It was much better that way.
