    Hey all, another quick question. I'm going to take the advice from here and obtain my Hazmat certs. But I'm curious, what type of Hazmat does KLLM usually transport? I'm a bit nervous hauling Hazmat, but will do it if it means more miles.

    Thanks!

    Nothing to be nervous about, really. They had some pretty caustic stuff back in 06 and 07, but it's not like you'll be expected to handle any of it or clean any of it up should there be a spill. All you have to do is drive it from point A to point B legally and safely.

    Having HazMat will certainly get you more miles with them. Especially in and around the Houston area.

    Paint, cleansers, stuff like that. The other day my husband had a pallet of poison. Some of the hazmet loads are amazingly small; one load was 585 lbs. No problems with steep grades on that load.

    This past month has been really busy, 3000+ miles per week. Before that, about 2500. September was horrible, but other than that usually 2500, some more, some less. He was actually saying this weekend that he didn't want to complain, but he would really like a day, or even a half of a day, off to just sit and do nothing and clean up the truck.

    Another quick update on orientation dates.

    My recruiter said they are trying to have orientation every other week right now. They want me in for the February 16th date, but I probably won't be done with CDL training yet, so early March seems to be when I'll get in.

    She said they are recieving tons of applications right now. Luckily I'm officially in the approved pile.:biggrin_25520: But she said she's got at least 25 applications sitting on her desk that she hasn't even started on yet with more apps coming in all the time. She also said to keep in touch with her every week or so just to let her know how I'm coming along.

    Thanks for answering my questions on the Hazmat certifications. I feel better knowing I'm not going to be hauling anything too terribly dangerous. I also asked the recruiter today if I should get my Hazmat and she said absolutely. It'll bring more miles my way and they "pay more" when hauling Hazmat, but like an idiot I didn't ask how much more. My main concern is the miles so I didn't even think to ask.

    Good luck to everyone!

    Yes, get your HazMet. They will reimburse you for the cost of it if you ask them. I believe you get an extra $50 a load for Hazmet. But most importantly, it keeps you moving.

    Baack Thanks this.

    Yes, I am definitely getting my hazmat endorsements. My orientation date is Feb 16th now. I only wish I could go sooner. Oh well!

    Right on both accounts. They do reimburse you for getting your HazMat endorsement. Just give a copy of your receipt/s (background check and whatever the test costs) to your recruiter.
    HazMat loads pay $50 extra per load- flat, regardless of trip length. Many of you will see companies who say they pay an extra 3cpm for HazMat but if you sit down and do the math...

    10m = 30 cents
    100m = $3
    1000m = $30

    So, since most of my HazMat runs have been 1000m or less, the $50 actually comes out better than some 3cpm.
