A CDL permit question.

When I had the permit and was training I kept my own logs.

Would it really make sense any other way?

 

I logged my drive time. Then when the other students were driving I logged sleeper berth.

The trainer must be in the jump seat while you drive and they log on duty time. If your trainer is out of total hours for the day then the truck must be parked as they must be always in the passenger seat and on duty while you drive.

 

########! The trainer can be in the jump seat and on duty. A CDL holder can be on duty indefinitely if they want. They just cannot drive until they’ve had 10 hours off duty/sleeper birth or a reset.

 

With a lot of carriers that trained, the first week to two weeks or until the trainer feel comfortable you running solo hours, both you and the trainer on duty at the same time. One driving the other in the passenger seat logging on duty not driving. Once you upgrade to team status then whenever one person is on duty or driving the other is off duty or sleeper birth.

 

First off NO carrier's safety dept will EVER allow a trainer to go over on their 70 and be on duty like that. No point in trying to argue this point because most of us in here that has been around training carriers know better. Also if a trainer does go over on their 70 they can NOT drive until they pick up a recap or 34 hours has passed. Truck drivers can go over that 70 as long as they do not drive. However once over that 70 they can't just take a 10 hour break and go drive. They MUST either take 34 hours off or get recap hours. If a trainer is driving using up on duty hours then sitting in the right seat they are chewing up that 70 like nobody's business. For all purposes to drive they would have to do a 34 hour close to every 4 or 5 days. You start doing this and you spend so much time sitting it stops making sense to go over on those 70 hours like that.

 

Simple answer, you are a driver with everything except the license.

You keep your own logs, you follow the hos like any driver and you drive just like a regular driver.

The "trainer" is to be in the passenger seat at all times, they have to log on duty and can drive as long as their 14 is not expired.
