Belly, choke or gut wrap

    Aimed at any new guys to the field. I'm no expert but I finally got a couple loads I could get photos for examples

    I call that a gut or choke strap. The blue strap. From one side of the trailer underneath, around everything over top, then back underneath. I used a hand ratchet on the right side of the trailer, with winches located on the left side for the over the top straps

    In this case the pipe was staggered, and in my opinion, doing this helps lock everything together to make it one bundle. I still have regular over the top straps (yellow) for length or weight. I don't count these types of straps as part of my aggregate, usually.

    I call in between layers belly straps. Again I feel, as an opinion, alternating which side you pull to helps.

    I would call that a choke. Going around the whole stack, either terminating to the same spot or hooking it back to itself.

    I used belly straps (not pictured) as well as over the top straps. Then added a choke strap to try to prevent shifting.

    Why do you go under the bundle first? Under, then over, back under to the other side? Instead of going over first?

    Depending on what it is, it's easier to lay the strap/chain on the deck first, then load the product

    Either way works. I was merely trying to explain it, rather than steps to follow. Good catch

    If you go over the top, you get more work from the strap or chain. Not only do you get the squeeze, you get down force.

    That would be from anchor point, over the top, back under, then back over the top to anchor point.

    The easy way is to lay the strap or chain on the deck, load over it, the the ends go over the load and get secured.

    I haul a lot of PVC pipe, and it's not always locked into the wooden lifts. A lot of the time it's bundles I've assembled and banded together. I do a lot of "choke" strapping. I've found that going over the top first snugs up a lot tighter than going under first. Yes, it is sometimes easier to have the strap or chain laid down on the deck but I've had some issues with the strap not getting tight enough around the bundle when I do that.

    Two things. One, if you overlap any strap, the part that is going to pull for tension needs to be under the hook or stationary part. If you go over, the strap will pinch the stationary end and keep it from fully tensioning.
    Second, always good to offset the ends of the strap.
    If you start from the middle of two pockets, move the hook forward one space, the tension end back one space.

    Best way to choke, IMO, is using a strap with no hook and a winch on each side. But that's not always an option. Unless, you have plenty of winches on both sides.
