Paid $24K. Truck has 1.3, and the engine is unknown. I had it checked out before buying it which really didn’t help me much. Had my local shop look at the rod and main bearings which looked near new. Put 10,000 miles on it since changing the oil, and it has used half a gallon. I would guess 300-400k on the engine.
-
that was a bit risky no? especially at 24k. Glad its working out for you though. The more i read on here the more stressed i get about buying a well maintained truck.
-
It was a risk much like quitting a steady job to be an O/O. Nothing in this business is a safe bet. I wound up replacing the clutch and a differential, but still made my budget of $30K. If you look at the prices of trucks of this era you’ll see it was a pretty good deal.BoostedTeg and Ruthless Thank this.

At $20-30k budget you better plan on dumping a lot of your cash flow into repairs. While you may have better luck than most; everything old needs a little love, n some more than others. -
i agree, risk is unavoidable. what mpg are you getting?
-
If I’m running around the mountains hauling 48K about 5.5. Flatland with lighter loads gets about 6.5.
-
I spent 34 two years ago and only had to put tires on, kingpin and tie rod ends, and a clutch, I'd do it again in a heartbeat but buy a stepdeck instead of a hopper.
-
which truck/motor did you get?
-
97 w9 with e model cat 18 speed and 3.55s. Ain't pretty but it moves down the road at a good clip.Gumper Thanks this.
