Well , the c1 school is a joke, and from what I understand most schools are. I guess there are some good ones. But getting back To c1 they train u on a strait 10 and then ship u to decker, they r all autoshift, you really need to spend a year on a 10 speed because when you get a job with a good company you will need to re-train and a lot of companies will have to hire u as a student because u don't know how to shift, so now you have to put in another year to get to the good money. Decker , afs , pam, any of them that fall under pam are garbage.

Getting back to the staff at c1, kevin is nice, yeah he is a cool guy that is very pleased with himself, and troy is disgusting , how did he pass the dot physical he is nasty. And he has a filthy mouth on him.

    HI All

I dont think prospective students realize how bad some of these FOR PROFIT truck driving schools can be. I live in stlouis and thought about attending C1 here but opted to go to NU-WAY(down the street from C1) instead. I knew before hand that this school was bad. But, because they're real close gave them a try. They had 2 dilapidated range trucks and between 15 to 20 students per truck. Evidently they believe people can learn how to drive a truck by observation. "TAKE NOTES THEY HOWLERED" Out on the road there is 4 students per truck and no seat belts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The day ran 7am to 5pm six days a week. 10 hour days and I was lucky to get 15 minutes per day on the range. During the course of the program I got 3 hours behind the wheel on the road. According to their there literature their program was 18 days long. Not one person graduated on time. It took 4 weeks before the 1st person graduated.

Unfortunately for me this program was so bad i dropped out. Attending this school was the worst decision of my life. Make sure u either attend a school that is PTDI certified or at least community college. State schools are committed to students and taxpayers in their district. Business schools are only committed to making a buck!!

you said:::::::: it's a great way to get started in the industry, esp. because experience is 9/10ths of the battle. Good luck in your new career!!

it is true, you get the time in and the log books to prove yourself and you can have a job anywhere.... and that is what i am doing, my punishment at crst is over, i get paroled from crst on aug 18, 2008.

I also went through C1 when they were in the old location 11 years ago. I had a great time but also agree it's, a learn it quick or you're booted deal. I was given a plunger and and was told to practice double clutching in my room lol.

On the second day I was the cleanest shifter going through the gears... not so much on the down shift though. The concept of the school is to get you qualified to pass a CDL test.

I learned a whole lot about the pre-trip and still remember the Smith system points. "(A)ll (G)ood (K)ids (L)ike (M)ilk". Aim high in your steering, Get the big picture, Keep your eyes moving, Leave yourself an out, Make sure they see you. As well as the goal of a 7 second following distance.

If you can learn quick and concentrate on the task at hand, come up with ways to remember what was taught so as to be able to call on a skill when needed it is a great program.

If you know you are a person that needs extra time they are willing to work with you..... until you show no further improvement. I went through Schneider so we were kept separate to learn different paperwork.

The actual behind the wheel experience was done with Schnieder through a tier system of Trainer then Team then Solo on a board that was watched like a hawk.

I had a great experience at C1 - hotel was a dive of course. Instructors were always willing to help with any issues or questions. It was alot of hard work (or so i thought at the time-now i look back it wasnt bad at all) Alot of people complained and called the school crap, i also noticed that these same people were usually not focused on what they needed to learn. Biggest thing to remember is the instructors have to go by a set curriculum also. They are there to help you GET YOUR CDL not teach you to drive. Even your company trainer doesnt really teach you to drive ive learned more out here by myself. I had a great trainer - however if i wasnt called an SOB once a day i just new he was in a bad mood. I miss the comments "hey ya sob your turn to drive get your lazy arse outta yer rack" and if a few comments like that bother you this aint for you. Go back to whatever it was ya did before. My trainer taught me a hell of alot - and was well worth it. it was definantly a great learning experience and a little extra time seriously reduced the oh #### moments after i went first seat. One last thing. Expect changes in how you view life, family is very important but sometimes they dont understand. (my wife left me after my first week with my trainer) but keep in mind if you are willing to get out here and do the job its very rewarding for you and your family

Bring a pair of leather work gloves with you as well as a note book and a pen. In the mean time you could look up sites on the internet that give you the names of all the parts on the truck that would be included in the pre- trip.

For example, when you walk by a wheel, you would identify what you are pre-tripping to the examiner, you would say "Hose, chamber, slack, adjuster, brake drum, break shoes". This would be repeated at every wheel as well as "Rim, Tire, spacer or gap between tires, hub and lug nuts". As you learn the language of the truck then you can begin asking questions like

"why should I be looking at the chamber? what is it's function and what can go wrong? as well as what is the minimum thread depth allowed on a steer tire vs a trailer tire?"

The pretrip is were most people get hung up because they goof off at the hotel when they should be memorizing the sheet.

Best advice is what everybody else says, find a Community College to train. You need to read the contract carefully. The one that was placed in front of me, told to initial on the blank lines, one of the lines of the contract took away my Fair Debt Collection rights and Truth in Lending Rights. My contract was given to me to sign with 30 minutes left before we had to catch the bus back to hotel. They were passed out and we were told to initial all the blank lines and sign, date. Then they were collected in a hurry with a " I need to hurry up and get these filed with your company." Yes I tried to read mine, yes I asked for a copy, and got turned down on my request, "I don't have time right now, I will try to get it for you tomorrow". Of course tomorrow was after the deadline to cancel without penalty (3 days).
