Hi ~
I am trying to surprise my hubby with a truck and my brother in law has helped me narrow it down between the 2 trucks below. Do you think I should be concerned about the amount of miles on the Kenworth. I am buying it from Arrow with a 1 year warranty or 120k miles. The sales rep said it was off fleet and they will do the PM and change the seat covers and also give the truck a full look over. I was able to talk him down to 38k out the door on the Kenworth and the international. I am just tripping that the Kenworth is the same price and it has more miles. The Kenworth is fully loaded and the International isn't. I just dont want to make a bad decision.
Thanks for your help.

I urge you don't do this. Your hubby needs to find his own truck, that is part of the joy and sometimes disappointment of truck ownership.

OR........... Let him pick.

Miles mean nothing.
It's all about how the vehicle was treated and serviced.
I'd ask the sales rep to pull the ECM reports and at the very least it will give you idle hours.
Even with an APU some drivers will idle idle idle. That's hell on an engine.
Has the regen equipment been properly serviced over it's lifespan?
Records?
Who was the fleet owner or truck owner (can you contact them about service or problems) ??
I haven't had a PACCAR motor, but it's SAID to be a problem child.
Don't take my word for that.
Just passing on what I've heard about them.
Lots to consider here.
Perhaps... take your hubby at this late stage , and get him involved to make a more educated decision if he knows trucks more.
Appears he has a wonderful, thoughtful , wife. Keep it up !!rabbiporkchop, Ky Flash and bryan21384 Thank this. -
With the info given I'd take the prostar, but as previous posters said, it's a lot more to buying a truck. Only your hubby knows his flavor of truck
cybill234 Thanks this. -
Buy him a truck so he can work his hands to the bone to pay for it while you sit at home and collect the checks in the mail...
Let him tie his own noose..rabbiporkchop, 06driver and shogun Thank this. -
Make sure you don't buy a truck with a MaxxForce engine; there's a reason those trucks are so cheap.
RedRover Thanks this. -
The specs on the Kenworth are less than desirable. 3.25 rear ratio with a ten speed, and 455 horsepower, and it's gonna go well on the flat ground. Put that on a hill and it'll be a slug. And fuel mileage will suffer. The paacar engine in that era was a problem child from what I've heard.
The International is better spec'd. With a ten speed direct drive, and a Cummins, it should pull fairly well, and get decent fuel mileage.
On the other hand, the Kenworth is by far a nicer truck in my humble opinion. Should you ever sell it, it should hold whatever value it has fairly well.
It all boils down to having a nice ride that will cost more to operate, or going with simply a plain Jane work truck, and running with less cost. -
Let him pick.
Unless you have intimate knowledge of what he is running, and what he wants and needs it is likely to become a sore point.
How a truck is spec'd (what engine, trans, axles, etc) plays a major role in what freight it is suited for.
And even if he is running one type of freight now, he may be looking to shift soon, and is waiting for the right truck to come up for sale.jammer910Z Thanks this. -
Just so it doesn't get lost in the noise.Jarhed1964, deathB4decaf, haycarter and 4 others Thank this.
