Its technically illegal in TX from what I hear, but haven't heard of anyone being cited for it. I did some reading on that strange law... they state its a safety reason. Other countries make driving with shoes on illegal for the same reason.

These are a pair of rubber soled Laredo boots I've worn for a while. These days, I more or less just wear them while wrenching because the soles are worn enough that they are easy enough to wipe clean to avoid tracking dirt/grease/oil into the house. Not waterproof, but comfotable as hell. Have also worn allegedly waterproof boots from Ariats and Dan Post, but the waterproof status MIGHT last 6 months tops before they start leaking. My current pair of everyday work boots are some HH square toe composite safety toe boots I picked up on black friday for $65. Never used to wear safety toes because I had never found a pair that didn't hurt my feet with every step...but my dad had just visited and we got him some safety shoes using my discount, and he said to buy a size bigger than you'd normally wear. Don't know if that was the trick or if these boots just fit better than any other pair of steel toes I'd ever tried, but they're comfortable for everyday wear. Hell, if I'm not wearing the Laredos, I probably have on the HH with their composite toes even on my days off.

I’ve tried those once. They don’t seem to work too well with my girly high arches.

I was pulled over for a random road side inspection in Kansas a few months ago. Pulled over in a rest area, and the trooper came to my driver door. When I opened the door to chat with him and hand over paperwork, he saw that I was driving with bare feet. He asked if i always drove like that and I said yes. He laughed, and said he'd drive that way too if he could get away with it.

So I can't speak personally about every state, but in Kansas (and California), it's not illegal to drive without shoes on.

I haven't worn tennis shoes outside of gym class since jr high...always boots...and for the opposite reason. I don't have very much of an arch at all, so any pair of shoes with a lot of support in the arch kills my feet.

I remember Brazil being one, and others in South America recommend driving without shoes.

Looked it again to refresh my memory, most of what I read its a myth its illegal in the states.

"You may not be able to walk into a McDonald's in bare feet, but you can drive there without shoes. Driving a car barefoot is legal in all 50 states. While the risks of barefoot driving are debatable, the practice is not illegal, though most people assume that it is."

Only thing I found is that flip flops are a bad idea due to its looseness. I don't wear those so I am fine.
