HazMat Routing

I didn't and have been mad at myself for not doing it if there is a next time I will ... that could really get somebody killed

 

In Little Rock you are not allowed onto 30 downtown from 40 which is between the US 67 split and the two right lanes going west to Oklahoma. You can stay on 40 until 430 south and be in 30 SW of the entire CITY before too long.

Alternative would 40 to the Galloway exit area, you are presented with I440 south, take that around across the Arkansas river and you will find yourself on 30 to Texas with hazmat. but NOT 30 north towards I40 across the core and railroad yard bridges etc.

Or you can bypass the whole little rock problem on US 67 past Searcy, there is US 64 west at Beebe go right off that ramp 29 I think, and follow it to Conway (Make sure you dont get on 64 B the older two lane road. There is a brand new 6 lane bypass south around Vilonia now. (Which has survived two big EF4 tornados recently)

Once in Conway you are to stay on truck routes until 40. Which is pretty much right there. And continue west. Be careful on the two lane portions, there is a transformer oversize upwards of 250 ton that passes through several times a week until they go north on US 67 after double checking that big freeway overpass a few minutes.

It goes without saying you do not put that hazmat anywhere that is not designated safe for it. ( Explosive and radioactive ones refer to safe haven locations)

Keep in mind always that even though our old US 67 is being destroyed (Built 1962) and raised up above known flood zones and being built for future I-57 intersate codes which will take a few years, there are spots on that freeway near Ward McRae Austin and most especially Jacks Bayou which is about the 11 mile marker above the airbase. We can take certain amount of rain and it wont flood (About 10 inches in 24 hours) but anything more than that you are already looking to either State 5 or State 107 which is the high ground non flood alternative to bypass 67, especially if your hazmat conflicts with water.

There is no point in even looking at eastern arkansas, we are defended by bayous and levees that will flood when it's good and ready. The Union Pacific Railroad Main itself is also a defense to flooding until water undermines the high fill ballast and takes the whole double track main down and then goes on to flood a bunch of homes that should have never been built in that field.

 

Rule of thumb is to avoid freeways that run close to downtown. Most cities will route you around the loop.

PC Miler has HAZ mat and street level routing. Prepare to pay for it.

 

I would google each states hazmat routing and keep those PDFs in a folder on the front screen of your phone. or bookmark the web page and keep in a folder on your phone. Alot of states have done a decent jobs of trying have well documented established routes and that way if you get pulled over by a grouchy sheriff in Laurel, Deleware, you can show him that his own state says you can be on that road through HIS town.

 

I've maybe only seen one sign on the highway that diverted you off the road for hazmat.

when I drove hazmat out of state the carrier would give directions, you had to follow.

there is no special routing for hazmat on rand McNally.
