Hi, colleague in trucking world suggested I post here and get some advice, I don't know anything about the forum so here goes, hope this is a good spot. We're a land management company (just me and a couple of friends). I'm looking to buy some wheeled logging equipment equipment in Canada and move it down to Virginia, it's a bit wide, 9' 6" and 12 high or so, about 38k lbs or so 32' long. So it's not like a 12' wide excavator but it's not the smallest thing in the world either.

Do I need a broker or would a trucker from US be able/willing to do all the permitting?

Should I get 2 truckers, one Canadian and one USA? so the Canadian doesn't have to deadhead back to Canada 600 miles? I mean, one guy drives across border and the other takes it from there?

If I needed a broker anyone recommend a good broker to arrange the haul?

What to know when communicating with the trucker? I want them to have the easiest trip I can arrange as the client but there's only so much impact I can make (can't change the price of diesel, sorry bout that).

What's a fair rate if that's not bad to ask, Montreal to Northern VA, about 700 miles.

    Thanks!

Yes you will need a customs broker and pay the customs fees. They can figure out how much it is and they will do all the paper work.

Then call a company like landstar or some other trucking company. Don't mess with a load broker, they will screw it up. Let the carrier deal with all of the logistics of the move. They can determine what is the right equipment to use and they will move it for you.

    Fair rate?

    $4 a mile per truck.
