I currently manage a small part of the day to day operations for an otr trucking company. I’m one of 3 managing partners. I have been contemplating getting my cdl and getting on the road.

Mainly because I do not want to depend on anybody having to move my trucks if needed to and also because I would like for my check to be bigger.

My question is about insurance. Will in most cases insurance companies shy away from insuring me as a new cdl driver? Or will they see me as a bit less of a liability since I’m part owner as opposed to a driver we would have recreuited right out of of school who has no stake in the company? Any info by anybody that has has a similar experience would be greatly appreciated.

Your standing in the company has no consideration in insurance cost.

Call the insurance company. Really, that should be the first move.

I didn't catch this but the insurance company doesn't insure the driver, they insure the truck. So if you are new, your rates will go up if they feel you are a higher risk with the new cdl, but as night said you should first call the insurance company.

By the way why would you get a cdl to retrieve a truck, just get a temp driver to do so.
