No profile info, so don’t know what state your in.
Here is an idea that might save you time and money.
Learn on a company dime. Find a company close to home that runs what you want. Flat, van etc. Then sign on with them. They are going to give you a truck, trailer and some training, plus run you around, and pay you for it. You get to learn the industry, make some contacts and get some seat time on anothers dime. This will help you get insurance when you go out on your own. While doing this, you get to make your plans for your own operations, get to see a number of trucks, what equipment is common.

Actually, a glider is SUPPOSED to have 2/3 of the drive train out of the same donor truck. Engine, transmission, rears. Not really any way to PROVE where the parts came from, though, but if the feds really wanted to get nit-picky, they could probably audit some of these alleged "glider" manufacturers to verify that what they are building meets that definition.

In other words, to be 100% legal, a rolling chassis would need the engine/transmission pulled from the same truck to be installed. It isn't supposed to be a pick & choose build what you want, but rather a faster and less labor intensive way to breathe new life into an old truck.

All I know is how a fellow shop down the road does his trucks. Buys the trucks from pete as I described, uses only 3406, 6nz and Detroit’s for all his builds. Lancaster caterpillar builds the same way and has brochures on glider builds doing it the same way. Not saying it’s right or wrong. I have no idea. Without getting too technical and confusing people, that’s how it’s done

I appreciate this and agree as a new driver this is the route to go. I have already taken the step with an O/O to be a team driver for 2 months of training.

Luckily half of family and friends are in trucking. I have brokers and O/O’s as brothers and friends. Reason why it has been a bit easy. Now I will say it won’t make me an expert driver by any means but 2 months of driving without a contract with a 20 year vet is better then a 2 year commitment with a fleet for free training of 200 hours.

It amazes me how negative some of you guys can be - not everyone goes bankrupt for purchasing a truck - you have no idea what this guys situation is and that was not even the question he asked. If you can not be encouraging then try reading and keeping it moving.

Your right. Only 99% that don't know anything about trucking does.

See, we are being encouraging. Once one get experience in the field then go buy a truck and actually have a chance then.
Sometime the immediate gratification is not the best course for a person.

I mean think of it, would you expect a restaurant to stay in business if one has never worked at one? Or a retail store, or a....

You are correct, chances are a new businesses has a high chance of failure when started by someone who has not worked in the field, but there is always an exception to the rule. I know 3 restaurant owners who had no idea of how one operated but all three are successful.

But then again there is no guarantee I can make it even with my circle, but My chance of success is higher then most new drivers.

So I don’t mind the comment and take it as advice no bad feelings at all specially when he didn’t know what my situation is.

    Thanks everyone for the advice.

This question tells me that you need to return to your circle and learn a lot more.

This tells me you will fail.

This isn't an industry like food service industry.

Do you actually know the difference between a driver and an owner?

Do you know how to actually buy a truck?
