Many years ago we had a 1693T (no aftercooler) 325 hp in a standard cab Pete twin-screw pulling a 9500 gal fuel tank. One driver, empty half the time. It ran 860,000 miles before we sold it - sold to a wrecker, I think, who took one of the driving axles out and ran it on - don't know how long. The only maintenance on it other than fluid changes and greasing, etc. was cleaning the injector cups one time, at about 600,000 miles. Oh, yeah - the rig cost back in 1972 was $26,000! And yes about 5 mpg was tops.

    Here is what I think.
    3406 is pushrod
    Big can is overhead cam
    Series 60 is overhead cam
Isx is overhead cam so is N14
I've never drove big cams, or 3406 but right now I'm driving a mx13 paccar, it is pushrod.
Pushrod is more torque down low, overhead cam is better breathing up high in the rpms.
Pushrod is more compact, lightweight, and easy to repair vs overhead cam.

I'm just a driver who wishes I could get some time doing engines, so don't take me to seriously.

Um the 855 line is not overhead cam, the ISX was first offering from Cummins to have OHC.

Starting with the 3406E cat went to OHC, only the mechanical 3406 is cam in block.

ODR, Diesel Dave and Oldironfan Thank this.

I think anyone old enough to have bought a new 425 cat from the mid 80s to the early 90s. Can, make the argument that the 3406b mechanical was the best truck engine ever produced.
like @bzinger said, Loved it !

Tug Toy, Oxbow and bzinger Thank this.
