How would they have known? I have a feeling it was set up that day.
I mean they are doing something there, right dead center of town, and there is no where to go, nowhere, but just no warning, nothing, just F you.
No way that can be legal.
And all them dudes are handing out citations, decent thing to do would be helping guys.
No one was looking or trying to deliberately go off route.
    Total BS.

This is a moment where this stupid stunt would have actually been useful and fun.

Nobody will ever just get a warning acting like that.

Here on my sandbar..the cops used to do that whole.."one gets a call we all gotta go watch!" thing. To the point me an the wife would joke about if you saw someone get pulled over you'd soon see several cars from the different town police forces here, toss in a county sheriff and a state trooper for good measure. Used to be rather common, nowadays not so much. I think it's cause the ones who did this, retired, moved, whatever. Either way the officers we have now aren't like this. So it doesn't happen nearly as often. Hell they even wave to you an say hello!

I don't have much to say about towns who are anti-truck. I get it if your anti-idiot. Idiots come in all kinds of vehicles an sizes. Ban them not trucks, or big ### sodas, or corndogs, or etc etc etc.

This post brought to you by Citizens Against Idiots. Just say no to idiots.

Sirscrapntruckalot - You amuse me. Yes, you.

Seems to me that the thing to do is to stop, call the state police, tell them about the unexpected temporary restricted route sign on a highway with no posted detour, and ask whether they would care to send a couple officers out to shut down the highway so you can safely turn around.

Tennessee claims to have low taxes, and this is part of their strategy. Brilliant

Same deal... one tiny little sign they had amongst a plethora of construction signs. I missed the no trucks sign and a cop followed me through town, pulling me over to write a ticket on the other side.

Then there’s the redlight cameras AND speed cameras.

    Naw... #### Selmer.

    found this:

The utility company, in conjunction with Tennessee Department of Transportation has placed a detour around downtown Newport for truck traffic that normally uses the roadway.

That traffic is being re-routed along US Highway 321 (Cosby Highway), Interstate 40 and State Route 73 (Edwina Road).

“Please be patient and bear with us as we replace our aging infrastructure,” Hammonds said.

    Bingo!
All @Dave_in_AZ had to do was a full blown investigation for the town he was going to.
Then he would have seen that that road was going to be closed for 3 weeks after May 7th. And we all know 3 weeks means 6 weeks...
