I hear ya. Main thing that kills mine is all the PTO/unload time. Some of these short hauls you spend more time loading and unloading than you do driving. However, those are the days you make the most money, so it works out.

Got 5.2 mpg maxed out on weight running the upper Hoosier and back. Better than I have got at times running 70 mph to NY. I see a brownie in my future.....1951 ford, SAR, Shock Therapy and 12 others Thank this.

Got ya'll beat. 3.4 loaded to max. (150000) 4 light load, (130000 to 120000) bout 5.5 to 6 empty. I really don't pay attention to mpg with what I do. LOL

I made the mistake of venturing away from a couple of my staple thread hangouts. Its painfully obvious there are way too many estrogen filled geeks who got into this line of work because they didn't know what else to do.
That sucks, its part of the reason this industry is the way it is now. Piss poor excuses for men with no passion. -
Had one of those this morning. Got to the shop early. Only been there bout 20 minutes and heard this awful sound outside. Went out and a steering wheel holder was doing a jacknife turn in my lot with a spreadaxle flat loaded with bags of sand. He was digging a hell of a ditch in my gravel lot. He stops bout half way in his turn and gets out to ask me where a business is. I pointed cross street and said he needs to kick the gravel back level. He shrugged his shoulders and mumbled something and drove cross the street. Little did he know the owner of the place he is delivering to is a good friend of mine. After a phone call ,said steering wheel holder was in my lot kicking gravel back where it should be. My friend unloaded half his load then refused to unload the rest till he fixed my lot. .....sometimes it is good to have the right friends in the right places ! LOL

I was hoping to avoid it like the plague.... so lets hope not!
8.0mpgs you say? Woah, woah, woah... I'm gonna need your name and phone#. Gonna have to tell corporate specing a POS truck with a 425/1650 Cummins, 10-speed, and short rears actually isn't the best way to get high fuel economy. Turns out, specing a truck that can actually do the job driven by a professional with a light foot can get good if not better fuel numbers. Imagine that.Cattleman84, sawmill, 1951 ford and 12 others Thank this.
