Stick, this is a Watkins n Shepard thread, what is it that you are talking about??? grass seed? on rails?? havent heard these 2 before now..
and the sayreville term is very tight... just the way i like it it...
oh wait! were talking about the yard.. thats right... sorry
no place to joke around or try and " impress " thee others there. iv seen many trailers get torn up on the sides from driver rushing to put the trl into the door cause they are causing grid lock in the yard.
dont worry about the other drivers, i never doo. i could care less what they think and or say.
All Temp is a refer company down on the oppisite side of the building, stay away from that said, you have no reason to be down that end, so dont be, at least with a trl, but our shop is all the way down at the end.

well compared to the taylor, mich terminal this warehouse in n.j. is huge. ive been here for a week and have seen many rigs come and go and no one seemed to have a problem backing into a dock here.where its tight is coming in off kennedy and going around the back.no big deal.i havent seen anyone have to alley dock between 2 trailers.....and exactly where is friendly's? i have 2 days off
-
if you are at the hotel, thier is one over there on 18, i forget where... the Happy Ending.
anyway
Vet, since you are at the term during the day, and cosidering that, the yard is relativley empty there for making it east to back in to the door. but if your there at night when most of the doors are filled, and you have to back in between 2 53's, youll have a whole new opinion on it. trust me!.
the yard jocky puts the trailers in the yard up on the line it the most wacked out way, they never ever push them back all the way, thus, making it very hard to get into a door.
i enjoy doing it, i take it as practice. -
Good day to all who reads this. I see mostly new or prospective drivers here. I have been with WS for 6 years it has been a VERY good job, Very good pay. I started out driving mostly East but all over the US. Then I figured out running East gave me the best miles so once there I strived to stay there. Then I got the opportunity to run local from home doing Canada. It has been awesome, I hear "You can have Canada" Alot well yes it has been frustrating at the border now and then but it comes with the job. Nowdays the Helena girls do an awesome job to make sure problems are minimal and it has helped. As far as the company it has changed ALOT in the past 2 years and YEs Walt has done alot to it. Some cut backs Frustrate me bad. But we need to keep in mind most of them may help keep WS strong. Shops are finding it way more difficult to keep up but with less help all they can do is try....They keep up on the basic stuff and first of all any safety item but optional stuff takes longer but they are trying hard. Again keep your head up and remember is is a VERY good job, Drive safe and cafeful and WS will take care of you...MOST OF ALL AS THE GUY WHO USUALLY TOWS YOUR TRUCK IN AFTER YOU MESS UP......SLOW DOWN...TAKE A BREATH...ANALIZE YOUR POSITION OVER AND OVER....DO NOT HAVE AN INCIDENT....Wrecking not only hurts you and your job....IT HURTS EVERYONE WITHIN THE COMPANY.....
snakeskin Thanks this. -
Tom, where have you been all this time, thanks for your imput, im guessig you like it here after 6 years. pretty good info you have shared, and i strongly agree that if you wreck a truck that it really does hurt the entire company. that could not have been said any better imho,
i bet a lot of people, including myself, would like to see more post from you if at all possiable. -
You posted in my other thread saying you would be in the Jan. 5th orientation...and you was...and i met you...hint hint...i was the PA guy...

Hello guys (and gals). First post; long time reader. I'm thinking of getting into the trucking industry (at probably one of the worst times because of the economy!) and live just south of Denver. I see Watkins has a terminal in Denver. From what I've been reading here, you guys that do more LTL and local/regional stuff make more then the OTR with all the drop/hook/stop pay etc.
My question: does Watkins have a lot of LTL type freight out of the Denver terminal? Is the hometime from the Denver terminal reasonable?
Thanks a bunch

drew. welcome aboard. w/s is a great company to work for. they do a lot LTL. BUT. they do a lot of OTR, it all depends where you are. if your on the west coast youll get stuck in the " loop ". making multi stops along the coast up to WA. then back down south, then back north, and so on. youll get coast to coast runs. the better term to get a load out of is is dalton ga. all carpet. usually heading to the NW. * anytime you pull a load out of dalton you have to scale down the rd at the pilot. w/s has an account at the pilot. *
like said about the emconemy. yes its a bad time, all across the industry. so the miles will be down then what they usually are. but they are doing their best to keep the trucks moving as much as they can.
home time : for every 6 days out, you earn 1 day at home, if you ask me, its better to stay out for 5 weeks, and then take a full week off at home. or stay out as long as you want.
look out for Dance4u's response here, he can clear it up better then i can. -
S2B...i was told that i'll be doing mostly terminal to terminal loads...do they normally do that for the guys just starting out?...or it's no promise on what i'll be doing?...
